That stupid choice probably stems from the general tendency to do away with skeuomorphic graphical interface design, which I can generally get behind but depends heavily on the context. Eidos Montreal have always been about what looks cool (sic), and today's cool is flat, high contrast and minimal -- except it obviously doesn't work here.

Hey, isn't that b1skit in the picture above? I wish he was still around to talk a little gaming. I've got a couple of things I wanted to go over with him.

God those maps are really awful - what super genius came up with the idea in a medieval world to have such a modern looking map?
Inline Image:
http://guidesmedia.ign.com/guides/772025/images/assacreed_map_acre2.jpgAssassin's Creed. They did it because Assassin's Creed did it too, without thinking about whether it would fit Thief. Safe to say now that not much thought went into the process of adding or removing mechanics from the game(XP, QTEs, swoop...)

Hey, Skyrim's UI went for a more modern look too and that was the best thing they could possibly have done.

Well at least it's better than TDS' maps, or in other words, it's understandable.

Not only it is better, it also makes some sense in the world of Assassin's Creed: the player (Desmond) lives in the present and is experiencing his ancestral memories in "Animus" device, so the modern look of the map might be, in my opinion, justified somehow.
But in Thief... not.

That is literally ripped off from Hitman :P
Also, it looks like not only are the uses of rope arrows contextual, but the game points out on a map where you can fire them. Wow -_-
Well, Hitman shows NPC locations, but yeah, this kind of futuristic looking map doesn't appeal to me. I miss the old, crude, drawings from the old games.
I don't think those are rope arrow points, they may be arrow stashes. I don't know though. I haven't played yet.
