But Durandal from Marathon, while not evil, is surely as manipulative as SHODAN. I love the bit where Durandal fakes his death.</STRONG>
I've never met Shodan :o (I guess I'll have to give in and buy a PC at some point) but if he's as manipulative as Durandal he must be a real pain. Not that I don't like Durandal, in a weird sort of way, although nothing will ever replace Leela in my heart.
Tech, would you say that Tycho is evil? I think in Infinity at least it felt that way.

SHODAN is a "she" bogeyman, or rather an it.
But more like a she. Give in and buy it already!

This was all so long ago, I'm afraid you're going to have to remind me. Actually, I didn't play the original Marathon; I did play Marathon II (where Durandal fakes his own death.) And you know, I was so sorry to kill the manipulative SOB of a machine, I actually felt bad - until he turned up again. That'll teach me!

All right, I presume you played the Win 95 version of M2 (M2 being the only one to make it to Windows).
I can't summarize the plot here, noone can (if you are interested, look here (
http://marathon.bungie.org/story) http://marathon.bungie.org/story )but a brief recap regarding AIs should be possible.
On the good ship UESC
Marathon there were 3 AIs, Leela, Tycho, and Durandal. At the end of the first game Leela was MIA, Tycho had been kidnapped by the Pfhor and Durandal had kidnapped a Pfhor ship.
Simplistically, Infinity (aka Marathon 3) is a tug of war between Tycho (now allied to the Pfhor) and Durandal, with the player as the prize and pawn.
Tycho is a lot less subtle but even more ruthless and cynical than Durandal, and has , of course, changed sides. Hence my original post.
Last one to the core is an unarmed BoB. :D

My favorite AI is HAL 9000 from 2001 (the book and the movie) mainly because he is very calm, but obviosuly very malfuntional.
I mean, Shodan is great, but HAL is a bit more realistic as an enemy. He's scary.

:( :(I have tried to get Marathon 2(tried a demo that i found on a cd) but i can't get it anywhere. :( :( :(

Thanks for the summary, Bogeyman!
And I suppose since no one's done it yet, I have to bring up that old classic, Colossus: The Forbin Project, which Warren Spector made everyone on the Deus Ex team watch :)
Go rent it and get a load of the creepy elevator scene.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Joshua yet. Sure he wasn't evil per se, but you could make the same argument for HAL. And HAL didn't almost blow the world up.

Shall we play a game?</tt></font>

This Marathon sounds like an interesting game. Any other details on the gameplay? Is it a FPS? Is it like SS1 + SS2? Can i still find it anywhere?

I'd like to echo TechImmortal's recommendation to view Colossus: The Forbin Project. A well-crafted and disturbing film -- especially the final scene.
