You know, when I first played Thief II I didn't know those tree things existed.
I guess it would be best to put the following in a spoiler...
I walked (well ran, but i run most of the time in the game anyway) through the foresty bit at the end of the level...trail of blood i think...and nothing came after me. I thought the noises were nothing more than ambient. Now that I know that such things exist, and infest that bit of the level, I usually swing a speed potion and run through the damn bit.
I actually had one of those things chase after me once - i had no speed potion (I think it was in the lord Ashton series). Wow.

I found the tree-beasts very dissapointing in TDS. It's strange that even with all that new tech at their disposal, I still felt that the original tree-beasts looked better.

Well I would advise you to expect not too much of the game. Not because its bad (I love TDS :) )but because it happens so often that too high expections let make it feel worse than it is (movies, books, game...)
One of the best things about monsters in the thief games that they are so rare and you face them without expecting them.....the tree beasts in the forest, the zombies in Thief 2, the cradle (IMO the whole mission is somehow a monster ;) ) and last but not least the spiders in shipping and receiving - maybe this sounds funny but they scared me a lot more than many other monsters, just because I didnt expect them...

I would seriously advise installing the Minimalist project first to give it more of a traditional Thief feel. I'm playing through for the third time, but enjoying it much much more with the traditional HUD, the lockpick HUD gone, and some of the AI features corrected. The play style options are nice as well.

When you loons are faced by a bunch of monsters, do you call it a "mob mob"?
Sometimes yes, it amuses me :)

I know you didn't just call a monster a fracking "mob". I know you didn't. Surely my eyes are playing tricks on me. Because, y'know, when newbies come tracking that gutter MMORPG blather in here... we have to kill them. Painfully.
I didn't realize being around for over 4 years was considered "newbie"

First of all, I play MUDs so I didn't even think twice when he said mob. And secondly, it is 'mobile' so I don't see the huge deal with says mob. It was a slip, big deal.
<3 thanks for the backup
What muds do you play? That's where I picked up the word like 3 years ago. :D
DarkElf_Mairead on 25/12/2005 at 19:02
Thieves World (thieves-world.com version) and Dawn of Demise, tho not as much of that lately. Someone mentioned the idea that someone should have a Thief mud, where you can be a thief, pagan, or hammerite. Now that would be fun :) Could make clans like that though.

I had the same experience with the tree beasts as DarkThiefsie. Except I already heard about there being giant walking trees that could crush me in swipe, so I was terrified walking as slowly as I could through that place. The ambients kept me thinking that a tree beast was going to chop off my head, but I soon found that no trees came running after me at all. I shot one of them with a couple of broadheads, it groaned a couple of times, I laughed (I'm easily amused), then made my way to the dead Pagan guy. I'm yet to see a tree beast in the OM's, but my first time with them zombies in Cragscleft were enough for me. :eww:

Oh yeah, those buggers scared the s**t outta me. When I'm playing a zombie-infested mission I'm not even edgy - I know there's zombies everywhere, and "If it moves, flashbomb it". But those buggers.... Damn. Sneaked past the guards on the dock. Past the guard that walks to patrol the ship. Open the crate. Got scared enough to leap into the water. Almost busted the ghost, luckily the guard didn't hear me.
That's my #2 spook spot in Thief, actually. #1 is still The Cradle.
