I think you're hung up on class meaning people think they are better than others. It doesn't. ...
No, I'm hung up on the concept that some people "naturally" belong to one class or another. They don't.

...people are still naturally in a certain class ...
This denies the concept of class mobility. This isn't about the royals. This is about the concept that being lucky and born into wealth and power isn't enough for some, they have to be snobs about it and look down on those who didn't have those advantages. It's about creating a special dialect and accent so that they can know as soon as someone speaks whether or not they are worth talking to. It's about self-reinforcing bigotry. And I don't like bigots no matter how wealthy (or poor) or powerful (or weak) or connected (or alone).

I think you've misunderstood what I mean by "naturally" in a class. I mean everyone is in a group/strata of society and calling it a class is just another name.
By naturally I don't mean what you were born into, but what you have achieved and the state you are in. My grandparents were decidedly working class but my parents jobs and education moved them into the middle class. If we "eliminate" the "class" system you still end up with people in NRS class C/D with children in class B. If I generate a lot of wealth and my children become professionals they will be class A, or upper middle class.
And the only people who really care about the name being class are those with none at all (NRS class E and not wanting to leave it because they are ineffective human beings) or those with a chip on their shoulder.
Where is SD for this discussion?

I don't think class as a concept is useful or helpful outside marketing. The only people who disagree with me are ponces who couldn't cut it from merit alone.
SubJeff on 1/9/2012 at 17:28
Well you're blatantly incorrect as you know I disagree with you and you know I cut if from merit alone.

Well how are you reconciling these two facts then?
jay pettitt on 1/9/2012 at 22:36
Well, I was going to give you the benefit of the doubt, but now I'm not so sure.
The 'I think X and if you disagree you are a Y' structure of argument doesn't make either X or Y true.
The class system you're espousing is a rather narrow measure of the human condition, and while you can classify people by it, I'm not sure it's obvious that you should, other than for narrow minded purposes. I'm pretty sure you could argue that without being class E or having a chip on you shoulder. In fact, I just did.
