ARX team.
One of the most exciting aspects of games such as Ultima Underworld, even Thief and Deus Ex is exploration of the world, and discovering **unknown** monsters.
My suggestion is that when the manual is made, if you have to include a part on monsters try to make it optional to the player to read it, unless it contains necessary gameplay hints (which it shouldn't).
That way it is scarier when a monster jumps out at you.

yeah, and don't let everyone know the monster types before hand, keep as many of those secret as you can. Nothing beat the time when i was hunting a gazer and had a poor description of what it looked like to hunt it down, then it started hunting me.
