Aside from the cringe inducing spelling of the latest FEAR game, I'm pretty stoked for its release (finally). I just learned the game has split screen coop and my console-loving ass jumped for joy.
I've been flip flopping on the game for the last year. The trailer's have been for the most part underwhelming, Monolith isn't even developing (although they were "consulted"), and I personally was really underwhelmed by Day One Studio's Fear expansion pack.
But lately the emphasis in marketing on the co-op and multiplayer is really appealing to me.
Check out the vid for Fucking Run: (

I can see it getting frustrated if one idiot team member gets consumed by the wall of death having the game end for everyone. It'll probably play like Left 4 Dead. If you can find a good squad, it'll be heavenly. Otherwise drop the controller and fucking run.
And then there's the Nazi Zombies spin off where you can ACTUALLY WIN. I love Nazi Zombies, but the fact you can only beat your past score gets old after a while. There's no payoff. I like where Day One is going with FEAR's horde mode, stealing from Left 4 Dead as they are.

I've read that the singleplayer is split screen, can anyone here confirm that the modes I've listed above are split screen as well?

Day One Studio hasn't done any FEAR expansion packs. They did the console ports of FEAR though.

Split screen on PC would suck.
I'm looking forward to this game very much. I love the fact that Fettel is involved and that we get the pointman back. I wonder if Beckett makes an appearance. Or if he's dead?
I got ready for this by playing through Fear and Fear 2 to remember all the storyline, There is a great deal of the story in FEAR1 that I hadn't realized was there before playing Fear 2. Usually in the phone messages.
Also. Despite all the griping about AI being dumb or all the numerous arguments about why Fear 2 was so bad and too easy. I played them through back to back, on the hardest difficulty each. I can count on one hand the amount of times I died playing Fear 1 for the entire playthrough, but with Fear 2 I couldn't tell you how many times I was killed going through it.
I'm not suck in the rut of thinking the first game is all that will ever be good with the franchise, So i'm pretty stoked.

Okay, fair enough, but they did make Fracture which was...a disappointment.
The emphasis on co-op (without making it integral to the campaign i.e. making you place with a bot Paxton), the involvement of Niles and Carpenter, and the post-apocalyptic setting is really getting me excited.
I still have concerns about the visuals and some of the enemies...like the jihad zombies. WTF?

I might get it. I am doing a second run on Fear 2 right now before it comes out. It's not as creepy and interesting as the first and there is no leaning and peaking around corners. But the graphics are nice and there are some nice sections throughout the game such as the school and stuff. It is a different engine so the game has a different feel to it compared to the original Jupiter engine. I actually prefer the older engine better with it's dark shadows and lighting effects. The Fear 2 engine seems more tuned for consoles.

Someone here with more free time and a vastly superior knowledge of all things engine-related posted a pretty lengthy comparison of the lighting and shadows in the two games, with the first one being better by leaps and bounds. He (maybe she) even pointed out that objects in the second game have static shadows drawn into the environment that aren't affected by any light source.
And if anyone was wondering, I watched a co-op video at E3 from 2010 and the game definitely has split screen co-op. However it's the "mini-screens" a la Call of Duty MW2 and World at War. WHY DO THEY MAKE THE SCREENS SMALLER? Does anyone know? It drives me nuts.
But yes, if anyone else cares, unless it was taken out in the year since E3, Fear 3 is most certainly offline, split-screen coop compatible.

Sorry for the bump...just thought I'd let eveyone know that if you preorder at Gamestop you get some handgun (don't care) and a FREE copy of FEAR 2 (pretty cool). That's not a bad deal at all. And, if you're like me, and already FEAR 2, just trade it in and knock a few bucks off FEAR and get a brand new copy.
Just a heads up.
