Thank you for the summary, pdenton.
I'm waiting for dethtoll's opinion on this game.

You'll have to wait a little longer, I still have to get through LA Noire then I'm doing a runthrough of the first two games. And I'm switching off between those and Legend of Zelda.

It's not anamorphic. It's limited to 4:3 though. I'm playing at 1280x960 at the moment which is weird because such resolution doesn't exist.
The XP/achievement popups cannot be turned off. On the plus side, FEAR traditionally doesn't mix scary moments with action moments. So when lead is flying, you don't really mind; when the game tries to be scary, they don't pop up since almost all of them are combat related.
"tries" is the good word. Granted, I wasn't that much scared by original FEAR either, but this is just soggy bread with thick weaksauce. Maybe because the game is so fucking short so the scary moments are compacitfied and, well, you know the whole deal - Alma, you, Fettel, etc. Zero mystery in this game.
As for the shooty bits, it's a cover-based shooter with health regen and slomo. Health regen + slomo = overpowered combination. The game is super easy on Commando difficulty, whatever that might be.
The XP system? It's... there, I guess. The bonuses you get for gaining levels are rather ignorable. Some elements of it can be abused, but blatant farming is not allowed as you can only gain one of each type of "achievement" per Interval.

Beat it.
I won't give away the ending (obviously) but it's not very satisfying. They DO tie in the co-op play neatly though.
I liked the campaign. It's far too short and the writing, while good, is too scarce. I liked the brothers' interactions and the cut scenes are extremely well done (probably thanks to Carpenter's contributions) but, like most critics have said, it's over before it really begins. Still, I'd take this over FEAR 2's story any day.
I know I'll catch flak for saying this, but I feel like FEAR 3 is best played on a console. Everything about this game is tailor made to be played with friends. You CAN play it solo but it's just nowhere near as fun as with a coop buddy. I'm lucky to have a few friends who are also FEAR fans, so playing and exploring the campaign together, sitting a few feet from one another in the same room, has been immensely enjoyable.
The online coop is fun, but if people aren't using a headset or you don't know your team, the teamwork factor is pretty minuscule. So again, playing with someone split screen is the way to go. Just my two cents. I'm not a console fan boy. I'd never say my 360 can compete with the power of a PC. But for co-op in a game like this, yeah, I think it's the way to go.

It's such a shame that the PC version doesn't seamlessly integrate into a service with:- a large userbase; a native friends list, where you can see what they're playing and join their MP game with a single button click; native text chat and VoIP... (
http://store.steampowered.com/app/21100/) oh wait. Aside from your couch co-op point, there goes your argument's corpse, floating down the river, riddled with bullets.

Was what I said inflammatory? I thought I walked on enough eggshells to avoid a PC-console flame war. I made it pretty clear I was talking about LOCAL coop. Maybe not. But that was my only point so I assure you my argument's body is just fine, thank you. Save your bullets for something worth writing.

I loved the first FEAR, it was nice and horrory. Fear2 I also enjoyed very much, but I must admit that without co-op I probably would sorely regret spending money on Fear3. Somehow over the first two games I just grew out of the scares, and they're pretty much the same old. Alma screams and world trembles, flashes of little girl in red dress, blood and gore from exploding soldiers. Yawn.
If the title is "Fear", it should be scary, and Fear3 ain't. But the co-op is fun :)
