'kay, I'm pushing for banning this mr. hermit person until he posts something of value that isn't trollsauce someday. I haven't seen a single post of his that isn't calculated trollbait.

You can spot em by the total inability to use the Shift key.

Somehow over the first two games I just grew out of the scares, and they're pretty much the same old. Alma screams and world trembles, flashes of little girl in red dress, blood and gore from exploding soldiers. Yawn.
"Same old" is one reason. It's not even about using the same character; it's just that there is no mystery in FTHREER. I mean the intro tells you Alma is your mother, Fettel is your brother, and the start screen has a fetus in it... what point is there in supernatural if it's all explained, all... natural?
The other, bigger, problem is a simple one: the game is too short. FEAR series traditionally switches between intense firefights and scaries and FTHREER does that as well. But the first game was super long and allowed the player to just wander around completely empty rooms in which
nothing happened most of the time. How many ladders did you go down before seeing Alma and Fettel? How many cubicles did you see before Alma suddenly appearing in one scared the shit out of you? How many elevators did you use before, after pressing a button, falling through the floor into a fucking pool of blood? In FTHREER it's the opposite. As soon as you kill the last enemy, DING you go "scary scary mode", some flashlights flicker, Alma appears, aaaand you're back to killing baddies. There is no downtime to make you relax and let your guard down, it's 100% action or 100% horror and that just doesn't work.
Kudos for making an interesting coop with two characters that play very differently and who have an uneasy alliance which is reflected in the game mechanics. Too bad you can't reset your stats though, as the game paradoxally loses on replay value because of that. I mean after you reach Rank 21, which takes less than two playthroughs(in other words, about six hours), why would you ever play the campaign again? For high score?

Too short? I was wondering why it was only 4-5 gb or so.

The problem is not necessarily the lack of pacing. I could deal with it. Even the first fear was a bit of a grind toward the later levels. I just got bored of all the firefights. Of course all you get is firefights in Fear 3, right from the very beginning. I can deal with that though, because the action is pretty good for the most part.
Here is my gripe. The story. There were so many loose ends that were unraveled during both the previous games. The real messed up parts about how armacham did things and all the horrors Alma had to go through.
I think Day 1 had much less invested in this game than monolith did for sure and they just focused on one thing. the dynamic between Pointman and Fettel. Alma hardly has any part in the story other than ZOMFG shes pregnant.
The whole focus of the story is just about "the family" and ends up being a pissing contest between fettel and pointman. Fettel keeps talking about family and jabbing at pointman for killing him (and the bullet hole in his head bugs me because every time I ever played fear, i Killed fettel with a pistol whip, I never shot him) When he never says anything about chewing his own aunts face off.
There are no logs or phones to answer. and as I said, pretty much the whole idea of pacing is gone.
Nothing is explained about the fear team and even the timeline has no continuity. In the first level loading screen it mentions that pointman killed fettel 6 months ago, yet Alma is supposed to be at full term.
What happened to Jankowski? It was one of the mysteries I was wondering about since the first game. We never find out. Betters makes no apperance anywhere in the game, and yet unexplicably, Jin Sun Kwon is all on her own.
Alma is replaced by the *memory* of Harlan Wade as the bad guy, and yet even though you're supposed to be on Alma's side, her ghosts and specters still attack you.
I'm very disappointed in the game, It hardly even feels like FEAR. So many people complained about how awful fear 2 was and I always thought that it was BS. Fear 2 is a GREAT game.
Fear 3. . . I'm kind of in shock. It has its moments Interval 03 was pretty damn good. But other than that. I'm just in disbelief that they could dumb down the game so much. Screw co-op. I don't have anybody to play it with anyway. All my friends play Xbox.

FEAR 1 is the last game in the series that is a proper PC game. I have little hope that we will ever see one again, especially after First Three Assault Recon, whatever the hell that is supposed to mean. Maybe they named the game like this to have an excuse and say a proper FEAR 3 is coming later, wouldn't surprise me having seen the quality of the story and writing.

Nice write-up, Advoc. I always respect your opinions on games. I may pass on this one.
