While I don't necessarily get the vehement hatred directed at Square's characters (in general I don't understand how people can get all that worked up about books, films or games they don't have to expose themselves to, at least if we're just talking about difference in taste), I'd definitely say that they're the weakest link of what I've seen of Final Fantasy. There are usually some characters that are okay and one or two that are pretty cool, but the leads tend to be insipid.
But take away the characters and the games feature quite stunning worlds and art design. If only you could get Square to work with, say, Obsidian (and a very good QA team); Square works on the world and art (except the characters - or at least they let someone else design them), Obsidian does the story and gameplay. How 'bout it?

Errr, no. Square does the system, Obsidian does everything else.

Being Final Fantasy and all, I for one expected it to be at least musically competent.
What a piece of shit
Keep in mind that Uematsu doesn't do the FF soundtracks anymore.

Except when he does, like for XIV

I meant single-player FF, which was what was under discussion. I certainly won't be signing up for any FF MMORPGs!
Admittedly, apart from being a shit game, Lost Odyssey had an imminently forgettable soundtrack despite being 100% Uematsu.

I will(as long as there's free trial of course), since it seems all Koreans and westerners can do is copy WoW over and over.

I've started replaying Final Fantasy IV (the fan-translation of FF4 Hardtype, emulated on my PSP). Despite it being one of my favourites in the series, I've never actually bothered to finish it because there's a nasty difficulty spike around the time you climb the mountain so that Cecil can become a Paladin. I think that on my last playthrough years ago I gave up on it when I couldn't defeat Baigan.
I'll try to get around it this time by doing something I loathe about (older) JRPGs - having to level grinding in the fields if you want to actually get anywhere.

I wish every game had the option of compressing long dialog in the form of random avatars.
