I've started replaying Final Fantasy IV (the fan-translation of FF4 Hardtype, emulated on my PSP). Despite it being one of my favourites in the series, I've never actually bothered to finish because of there's a nasty difficulty spike around the time you climb the mountain so that Cecil can become a Paladin. I think that on my last playthrough years ago I gave up on it when I couldn't defeat the Baigan.
I'll try to get around it this time by doing something I loathe about (older) JRPGs - having to level grinding in the fields if you want to actually get anywhere.
That's why I like FF6- there's hardly any grinding required until the very end and if you know where to go you can very quickly build up your magic. And you don't even have to level everyone up- if you're like me, you can just do it the cheap way.

Really? I didn't even grind then. I usually just play the game through and pick the least-used characters each time I finish an area in the World of Ruin.
I usually end up fairly low-level (mid 40s) by the end of the game, but as long as you have at least the level three elemental spells, you should be fine magic-wise.

I taught my main party the high level spells and that was enough to see me through.

Oh lord, the theme song for the English version of XIII is by Leona Lewis. I really can't say if that is an improvement over the Jpop power ballad from the TGS 09 trailer. That's like substituting a water cooler filled with turpentine for liquid shit, neither is fit for consumption.

Leona Whois? Doesn't matter much to me, FF's always been sappy to an extent since VIII anyway. This song supposedly underpins an 'emotional moment', so, uh, yeah.
I like the fact that the game features a female protagonist. Considering the ever-escalating effeteness of FF's lead characters since 1999, I guess this had to be the logical end point.

At least one will put you out of your misery faster.

Okay, see, as sappy as it was Eyes on Me at least made SENSE in the context of the game.
This is just some generic song with nothing FF about it. FF characters don't get up, take showers, make beds, and put on makeup. No.
But, it's not like I was planning on rushing out and buying FF XIII anyway. Honestly, once Uematsu left my interested dropped considerably.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about the Final Fantasy 'series' anymore. I hope those of you clinging to the J-RPG genre get what you want from XIII, but I moved on after FFX and never loooked back. I just think they long ago deviated from what FF is, and for the worse IMHO. Besides, the entire genre has been stuck in a rut for almost 2 entire console generations and shows no signs of evolving.

You could argue the same thing about a lot of genres. Eg narrative driven pure FPSes pretty much been the same since Half-Life 1, to the point where genre hybridised games seem to be the only way out of the hole.
