You could argue the same thing about a lot of genres. Eg narrative driven pure FPSes pretty much been the same since Half-Life 1, to the point where genre hybridised games seem to be the only way out of the hole.
Oh, I agree with you to a point, but I was just kind of trying to keep my statement focused. My brain can get off track and I'll ramble otherwise.

You should at least play 12, gunny. That one's worth playing a bit.

It's true. Assuming you don't mind massive amounts of grinding.
Or maybe I just had to do that because I totally sucked at it.
Regardless, I got like 70 hours in with no ending in sight, so I had to drop that shit. At least it TRIED to do something interesting and new with the combat system. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the aesthetic.

Uh, yes. I played straight through until I got the first esper. I found most boss battles very difficult and finally put the game down after that story arc.
When I picked it up and started going to the next area, I realised I was level 15 fighting level 22 monsters and I was damned if I was going to level grind to close that gap.
So I sold it. I've got better games to play.
Personally, I find the Shin Megami Tensei games far more entertaining as far as JRPGs go over Final Fantasy nowadays. Nocturne was fantastic :)

(
http://blog.ningin.com/2010/02/20/final-fantasy-xiii-ps3-or-xbox-360-how-to-choose/) ...and the 360 port of Final Fantasy XIII is reportedly noticeably inferior.
Quote:
It seems our fears have come true and the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will indeed be a crippled one. The Xbox version only runs at 1024×576 with 2xAA while the PS3 version runs at 1280×720 2x msaa. It is far from optimized to be a perfect port, and many compromises have been made.
For instance, the trees in the background are removed, and low resolution textures for the ground are replaced in the 360 version. There’s no telling what else they had to remove in the 360 version. This means that the original screenshots posted by Square were *cough* a white lie, and their new ones supplied are accurate.
(Square left their mouse pointer in their Photoshop edited original screen caps, and were caught, previously.)
LMAO at the difference in resolution. I honestly don't give two shits about this game, but the version spanning multiple discs would've been the one which I'd have avoided regardless.

It's like people smelling turds to see which one is less smelly.
EvaUnit02 on 22/2/2010 at 10:07
ITT, people writing off a game that they haven't even played. How do you know that FF13 is a turd?
june gloom on 22/2/2010 at 10:12
Because he's Dresden.

Holy shit, there's a tree missing. Two trees, even! And the pixelated texture attempting to approximate grass on the PS3 is pixelateder on the 360. It's positively shocking!

I'm not buying it. That would reward stupid design choices.
