Well, for me, this is the first game in a long time I've had to back up my saves and deinstall it to stop myself playing it. I don't really play RPG's so much, are they always this huge? My overall impression is awesome, a few bits of dodgy dialogue and voice acting (oh my god, when you tell the android hes an android, why does he groan like that? He sounds like hes having an orgasm. That bit was horrible), but overall - massive world, interesting stuff, shooty works very well. I'd say its more in-line with what I expected STALKER to be, without that CS style twitch shooting and a bit less grim. Definitely one of the best games I've played in about four years.

RPGs usually have long campaigns, but The Elder Scrolls games have particularly big, open worlds. Bethesda has always focused it's RPGs more on free roaming and exploration instead of strong plotline and tight, driving narrative. So there are RPGs in which the progress is more linear and takes it's time, but the world is not so big and open (Deus Ex, KOTOR, Vampire Bloodlines) and there are RPGs which try to combine strong central plotline with some freeform exploration and suceed in it (Baldur's Gates, old Fallouts, Mass Effect?) and there are those which try to emulate the TES approach (Gothic series).
But like with other TES games, you can follow the main plotline and ignore exploration and most sidequests. Fast travel helps you with that, even though hardcore TES fans seem to despise this innovation which Oblivion introduced. They just like walking. :D

And I happeded to leave the Vault at night. I was prepared for the beautiful vista as seen in videos, but it was dark and I had to wait for the morning to enjoy the view. Kind of disappointment.
I had the same 'problem' when I first left the vault. Dampened the impact of the scene quite a bit, unfortunately. Had it been during the day, it probably would have been, quote Stitch, the "most jaw-dropping moment in a videogame". At night, it's still nice, just a bit... grey.
As for the rest of your post, you sure do like to nitpick, don't you? ;)

Sure I like to nitpick - particularly for the money I paid for CE - but don't take me wrong, I am quite enthusiastic about the game. The biggest flaws I see in the interface and some in controls. Again most flaws result from multiplatform development. It just needs some gentle modification and everything will be fine.

There are a couple of mods around that tweak the UI a bit. Nothing earth shaking but they shrink some of the fonts, display more text in the scrolling views, remove some of the dumb UI sounds (bad karma etc). They're all at the Fallout 3 nexus and you can pick up an original music mod there too which will improve the experience immensely.

Well, I personally don't own Oblivion but I did paly about 4 hours of it a friend's place so here's my impression of it:
At first glance it seemed reasonably good, if a little desolated landscape wise. The Watt system is one of the best additions to the game and the inventory is very nicely sorted into categories. The models, environment are excellent and unfortunately my friend has a pretty poor system so I wasn't wowed as much as I would have liked. I really like the skills and RPG system that it has and that whole karma thing. The radio was quite a nice feature(reminds me of the GTA days). It's like Oblivion meets STALKER and I found myself quite addicted to it. 9/10:D

It's supposed to be desolated like that. Trust me.

Ah, I get it now. That would explain why the wasteland seemed to be more desolate than it's supposed to be - your friend probably had LOD levels seriously reduced.
Which leads me to heretical thought that maybe older systems actually make the wasteland better, more empty and depressive, what helps the atmosphere. :erm:

Heres 2 major bugs I came across that annoyed the hell out of me:
The water purifier guy vanishing mysteriously, never to be seen again.
The second one occured in Arefu. Earlier on I had visited the place and assited them with a nasty problem they had with a nearby tribe/cult of vampires. I got them to form an alliance with the vampires. Anyways a week later I came back to the town to steal a bobblehead from one of the houses there, only to find the town under attack by scorpions and all of the people except for the vampires were suddenly hostile to me, and I was forced to kill them all. Quite bizare for people to hate you when you had helped them out only a week or so earlier. Tried reloading saves etc, but nope they suddenly wanted me dead.
