But fallout 3 fulfills the wish for an open, seamless world seemingly endlessly full of dark mutant-filled ruins in the way that I was really hoping STALKER would.
Same. I think atmosphere in STALKER may be a little better at times, but that's about the only thing it has going for it imho. Fallout 3 has the bonus of not having a million repetitive fetch quests and replacing them with a handful of people who will buy stuff from you at premium prices.

I love this game.
VATS is nice, though the camera only seems to work like it should some 30 percent of the time, 70% it's behaving erratically and makes it difficult to actually see what's going on. But when it does work, it's great: smacking a raider bitch in the face with a powerfist and making her fly three meters back with the camera showing the action from the side = epic win.
I just went downtown doing a quest for the crazy Megaton shopkeeper lady, which I guess wasn't the smartest thing to do since I'm still low level. A group of supermutants attacked me, I thought I was toast. Then, out of nowhere, a group of Brotherhood renegades appeared and slaughtered the mutants, then greeted me and went on patrolling. That was cool.
Speaking of the Megaton shopkeeper, binge drinking of the irradiated water from the puddle surrounding the bomb to help the girl study the effects of radiation was heaps of fun, as was blowing my legs off by shooting my own mine under my feet to help her study injuries. Hilarious dialogue options too.
I'm feeling the same way as Vivian - I tried to play STALKER a few times, but I
a) couldn't get used to the hardcore shooting
b) craved for more variety
In the end, seems Fallout 3 is just what I was looking for. Haven't had this much fun since Bloodlines.

I'm enjoying the game as an RPG, but the dialog is so not Fallout. Fallout had actual CONVERSATIONS in the dialog - you said something, you got a response that made sense, you replied to that, etc. In this game, I come across someone in an extreme situation, use my Speech skill, and with a single sentence I completely change their mind. What the hell? The sentence wasn't even that convincing. This is particularly noticeable in the "superheroes" sidequest.
Still fun, don't get me wrong, and there are a lot of cool aspects...but Bethesda can't do dialog trees.

For what it's worth, I think Ken Levine is a great writer, but that his stories are all too similar. Bioshock, in more ways than I can count, is System Shock 2 in a new setting. The annelids are the slugs, Polito is Atlas, and the individual vs the many theme is still as present as always. Loved both games, but I definitely knew what was coming the whole way.

Is it me, or quests really are too easy to accomplish? They're long, yes, but not quite challenging. I mean player practically doesn't have to think how to solve problems, each quest has 3 or so ways of solving and it seems usually the ways are pretty standard, so it's almost impossible to not hit the right path even if the player is totally dumb. Playing it on hard, I think the game isn't challenging enough...

The problem is, most of the folks who might lay claim to that sort of status- the Levines and the Spectors and so on- are a bunch of hacks who got lucky the first time around.
Levine is the worst, though. Fuck that douchebag.

..it still hurts my brain to hear people say just about any stupid bullshit to dismiss something or to explain why such and such thing is bad and it's just so god damn annoying because there seems to be a certain pervasive kind of elitism here where it's "cool" to hate something that is perfectly fine..

..also I still stand by my assertion that Levine is a hack, but you're welcome to, you know, actually debate me on that in the other thread, which you never did for some reason
No further comment necessary.

Stalker actually tries to be as realistic as possible without any loss in fun that results from being
too realistic (can
you imagine having to take a shit every 12 game hours?)
Firing 30 bullets into an anorexic Russian dude wearing a leather parka before he drops is "as realistic as possible?"
If STALKER had better questing rather than nonstop fetch quests and if the gunplay weren't almost exactly like Far Cry I'd like it more I think.
icemann on 13/11/2008 at 02:45
I wouldn`t put Farcry and Stalker in the same boat. Totally different games.

Sorry, but merely pointing out that I referred to Levine as a hack does not count as actually debating on it. "NO UR RONG" is ineffective until you explain why.
Don't get me wrong; I like Bioshock, and obviously I love TDP and SS2, but it doesn't make Levine
not a pretentious douchebag. Read some of the shit he's said in interviews before Bioshock came out. They sound exactly like a liberal arts majour being amazed he's getting paid for coming up with complete bullshit. Which is exactly what Levine is.

I guess you haven't turned it into a living, there's that.
