However some people point out that level 20 capping is unfortunate for people who focus on exploration, as they level up quickly and then they encounter only strong opponents...
30hrs into the game and 10th level only. And seeing how more and more exp points is needed to get further levels I would say it won't be soon when I reach the cap. Anyway, the level cap is baaaaaaad.

I dunno to what extent it's true, but if it is, it means F3 still has some kind of NPC autolevelling.
People say that FO3 has auto-levelling, yes. I haven't clearly seen it yet, all I know is that now at level 10 (the weapon skills are improved mostly) the game is definitely easier for me than it was in the beginning. I've encountered only one super-mutant so far though, it wasn't easy.

Bugger, I've just found out that I've messed up a quest in Megaton - reloading it is then.

Yet I have to witness such random conflicts to be sure...
It's funny you mention that, because the first thing I saw after leaving the vault were a couple Brotherhood outcasts fighting giant radscorpions. Seeing dudes with miniguns and missile launchers going to town immediately after entering the wasteland spooked me out a little. :)
Re: Level capping, it took me about 45 hours to hit level 20, and that was just doing every sidequest I came across and then whatever sidequests I could take in the locations the previous sidequests took me to - basically no exploration other than that and visiting some non-quest places people marked on my map in conversations. In my case, hacking and lockpicking everything I come across probably accounted for a lot of the rapid experience gain. Main-quest wise, I hit level 20 sometime around finding the citadel. Playing as an assassin (basically sneak/science/lockpick tagged and small guns/energy weapons/repair as secondary skills) I was probably level 10 before I felt comfortable making my way to rivet city. The first time involved a lot of travelling back to Megaton to heal/replenish my supplies.

This game is HUGE.
That is good news.
Now I have one concern left. How about the textures ? Morrowind and Oblivion were looking gorgeous, but only after you installed custom texture packs. How is Fallout in this respect ?
And how close are we to seeing the first fan-made texture packs ?I've just stopped playing WoW. And now I am fighting my urge to buy the new expansion pack WotLK. I had a stack of old single-player games I want to play or finish. Finish The Witcher, finish Oblivion, play Crysis, play Stalker. My new nvidia 260gtx will hopefully help me enjoy these games. Adding another game to that list isn't maybe the smartest thing to do.

Textures are of similar quality as in Oblivion, 256MB videomemory should so-so for best quality, but then you'll have to lower resolution and other LOD for fluent gameplay. However you'll have to push Anisotropic filtering up a bit, otherwise they look pixelated even at shorter distance. No big texture packs so far, but there are some retextures of clothing and armor.

I think I found official answer : "A variation of level scaling is used to control the difficulty of the main quest, but enemies in areas that are not essential to the main quest will not be scaled to your level. Some places will be adjusted to your level when you first enter them, but they will not level up when you return - unlike Oblivion, you won't find raiders in Power Armor."

You do run into bigger and nastier creatures in the same bits of the wastelands when you are at higher levels. Level 17 you get giant fucking scorpions that shrug off lasers, bullets and landmines to charge you at 1000 miles per hour clacking their horrible giant claws together, for instance, instead of medium sized relatively fey scorpions that nibble at you and dance round a bit.

I'm still debating if I should pick up this game with my very old comp.
Athlon 2700+
Gig of 2700 Ram
ATI X700 Pro 256 AGP
XP Home service pack 3
I posted on the Beth boards but of course just heard that I should upgrade. Blah blah blah. Seems like everyone in the world has a lots of extra cash to spend except me. 50 bucks is a lot to spend on my very limited budget if I won't be able to play it. I don't really care if I have to play at 800 X 600 with everything low, but w/no demo to try, makes it a risky investment.
What do you guys think?

You can always download the game and pretend it's a demo, then buy if it runs well.

I was wondering what the Fallout communities reaction to fallout 3 was? I've heard they are one of the more abrasive communities out there. I've watched my brother play it and it seems rather good, though in my current gamers block I don't know if I can be arsed to play it or not.

You must be new to the internet. The Fallout community are absolutely batshit. They eat batshit, they breathe batshit, they drink batshit, they drive batshit, they work at batshit selling batshit and batshit accessories.
(
