Hmm, I'm hardly qualified to give a definitive answer that the status of the NMA community; however, I visit NMA semi-regularly and lurk in their forums every now and then. Overall, while they do come across as a bit caustic, I haven't found that they're leagues worse than us. This query actually got me to go back to the site and to see if I could find an official review. It seems that one isn't completed yet, but they did post an article about their impressions on the finished game. The verdict? A good game, but it fails as a true Fallout sequel. That really isn't entirely unexpected, and I've heard the same thing here as well.

I heard they also use batshit as lubricant, and if they ever left the squat would navigate using echo location.
There's a thread at the moment over there entitled, "Intelligent Deconstruction Review of Fallout 3". It currently has no replies...

You must be new to the internet. The Fallout community are absolutely batshit. They eat batshit, they breathe batshit, they drink batshit, they drive batshit, they work at batshit selling batshit and batshit accessories.
(
http://www.nma-fallout.com/) As expected, they're not happy with it.
dethtoll, if you actually took your time to read the forums over at NMA rather than making blanket statements, you'd discover that a lot of the important members of the NMA community actually quite like the game as a spin-off; they just don't regard it as a true sequel.
See the (
http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=47007) "Impressions" article for a surprisingly rational summary.
Me on the other hand, I
am completely batshit about Fallout.
Fallout 3 may very well be a good game
if you liked Oblivion, but I ain't gonna slap my money down and support a company that thinks it's okay to butcher and commercialise quite possibly the most important franchise in CRPG history.
Hell, the fuckers probably think that their massive sales are all the justification they need to continue abusing Fallout, but they're not getting my support.
Dumb fucks can't even see that it's not because it's Fallout; I can guarantee that probably a good 90% of the people who have bought Fallout 3 so far never played the originals; this can be evidenced by the fact that (
http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/fallout-3-outsells-previous-fallout-games-combined/?biz=1) "Fallout 3 has already outsold every previous Fallout game combined".
The
only reasons this game is selling so fast are because Bethesda had huge success with Oblivion due to being one of the first titles to launch with the 360, and the strength of their PR and marketing departments.
*Grumble, mumble, rassen, frassen*
Now
there's the rabid, batshit opinion of a demented Fallout fan that you were looking for.

What was really iffy about the comments made about the game when it was in development was when the lead artist admitted to never playing Fallout, and to a lesser extent, when Emil admitted to not really being a much of a Fallout fan. Emil admitted that he played and enjoyed the game very much, just that it didn't hold the same special place in his heart as it does with other people.

Also, how many reviews of the game have there been that actually compare Fallout 3 to the originals and not Oblivion?
You can count them on one hand, and that's quite a feat given that NMA's front page has been jam-packed with Fallout 3 reviews for the past couple of weeks.
What is it, 44 round-ups so far, with an average of 6 reviews per round-up?
Anger. Rising.
Happy thoughts Malf, happy thoughts.

I had a chance to read 4 magazine reviews so far, all of them compared the game to the originals. One even took a look at the original 14 point vision statement for Fallout 1 and compared how many points F3 delivers. Results:
1. Mega levels of violence. Check.
2. There is often no right solution. Check.
3. There will always be multiple solutions. Check.
4. The player's actions affect the world. Check
5. There is a sense of urgency. Check.
6. It's open ended. Check.
7. The player will have a goal. Check.
8. The player has control of his actions. Check.
9. Simple interface. Fail.
10. Speech will be lip-synched with the animation. Check.
11. A wide variety of weapons and actions. Check.
12. Detailed character creation rules. Check.
13. Just enough GURPS material to make the GURPSers happy. Undetermined.
14. The team is motivated. Check.
Surprisingly, the most critical and conservative review (bottom line: basically "good game, but not Fallout enough") appeared in a console magazine. Go figure.

9. Simple interface. Fail.
Funnily enough, both FO1 and 2 failed in this regard as well.

Malf, those "blanket statements" were in reference to the community in general, not their reactions to FO3. It's called reading comprehension there buddy :thumb:
