I wouldn't compare it to Thief Deadly Shadows, unless you thought TDS was better than anything else in the Thief series. FO3 is pretty damn excellent.

Or that FO1/2 is better than FO3.
No, I haven't played FO3 yet, but I'm going to get it. I think I'll be able to enjoy it for what it is, but it can never top FO1/2, because those 2 games hold a special place in my heart.

Amazon sent me the XBox version. My impressions of them are unprintable.

This. TDS was not as good as Thief 1 & 2 for EXACTLY the same reasons that Fallout 3 seems to be a pale imitation of Fallout 1 & 2.
That said, I'm basing this on what I've read and seen; I've yet to play Fallout3 so it may yet convince me. But I already dislike the way the setting and humour are forced down your throat, rather than just being a backdrop for a damn good game. Case in point - that trailer with the "Duck and cover" style black and white nuclear safety video. It's OTT, campy and obvious. Compare that to "War. War never changes." Fallout 1 may have been pretty damn funny, but the difference is it knew when and how to be funny and when to be deadly serious and not patronise it's audience.

Yet one of the main criticisms of Fallout 2 is exactly that it was "OTT, campy and obvious". If that is the main criticism, then it applies to 2/3 of the RPG series, it would seem.

Seriously nicked, do you even remember the intro to Fallout 2?
It was the exact same style of humor.

They were moving towards 100% all fusion powered stuff before the War happened if I remember correctly, which would have solved the oil issue. Though I guess you`d still need oil for more simpler engine things regardless.
Got my collectors edition of the game yesterday. The makings of dvd, lunch box, the bobbyhead figure and the art book are fucking awesome :). And the game itself is excellent as well. Being a huge fan of the original first two games plus Tactics I was worried that bethedsa was going to fuck it up, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the game is.
Spent something like 13 hours on it so far, mostly doing side quests and not much main quest stuff. Feels very Fallout-ish to me. They even got the same guy doing the intro from the past games (the guy from Hellboy and Blade 2 if I remember right) despite earlier claims that he wasn`t going to be taking part in this game.

Everybody loves Ron Perlman! If you don't you're not human.
Ron Perlman made Alien Resurrection bearable.

Watched a friend play the opening vault sequence last night and I was quiet impressed. The speaking and general animations are much better than usual for Bethesda, still not great but not bad enough that it becomes a distraction. The writing is much improved with seemingly a lot of choice of what to say and some of it quite funny and in the Fallout spirit. Liam Neeson also has one of the coolest voices ever. I will definitely pick this up now.

I watched someone play the game for an hour or two. It actually looks pretty cool. Although it is centered around explosions and limbs popping off for no apparent reason, and it's not as focused on RPG elements as I would like it to have been. It does look fun, though.
