I just found out that the recent v1.03 patch removed both the SecuROM internet activation + the disc check.
I can confirm that SecuROM internet activation is gone (but not the disc check, since I have the Steam release), well done Ubisoft.

I wonder if this is some sort of growing trend where they shove DRM up the game's asshole then some time later they patch it out.
They're dumb if they think that's gonna get them more sales though.

it's not something new; epic used similar with Unreal Tournament 99/2k3/2k4... initial release required disk check, but after a few patches this was removed...

The difference is, most people didn't cite a disk check as a reason not to buy the game.

The publishers want to stop "week 1" piracy really. Hard to crack DRM does work in their in their favour, eg Riddick: Dark Athena took about 3-4 weeks to get a working crack and (
http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=673039) that did halt a lot of piracy apparently.
Quote:
As of today only about 10% of all the Riddick PC games sold have been activated more than once.
One Riddick serial number alone had over 50,000 activation attempts, so people do try and pirate games.
Only four people have been unable to play on the PC due to DRM. In all cases the parties involved first tried to activate illegal serials. They were banned initially but then were manually unbanned when they purchased legal copies of the game.
...
Further down the line the DRM will be removed and a new unprotected exe will be released.

Wait what? Dark Athena was cracked in one day.

Bullshit, it certainly wasn't. I followed the coverage intently on that one, it took at least 3 weeks before a crack THAT ACTUALLY WORKED materialised.

I'd post a screenshot from a torrent site, but I'd probably be banned or something silly like that.
Edit: I think you might be right. Game upload (without crack) is April 8th. Crack upload is May 3rd. Color me surprised.
