After a few more hours of play, the game is getting tiresome. Drive to a crossroads, kill 2-3 mercenaries, move on the next checkpoint. I've only done a few of the missions in the main storyline, but they aren't much different. Is this really all there is? The setting is great, and driving is fun, but the gameplay seems overly and unnecessarily repetitive.
In a sandbox type game, there have to be more mini rewards I think. Take a game like Oblivion - huge world, made up of lots of smaller areas (dungeons, cities, ruins). But in each mini area, there was something worth getting, like loot, new weapons armor, etc. In FC2, you take out whole area for what? A case. The checkpoints are very small, but it would be nice occasionally find something there, like a new weapon or...something. The rewards seems far less than effort to get there.
I need to play more, but I don't feel that pull to do so like with other games. It almost feels like I'm forcing myself to return.
Edit: One other thing to add - it seems like almost everything is in the game is on one of the main roads, and everything is clearly marked. Again, one of the fun parts about a sandbox game is exploration, and finding cool stuff, secretly hidden off the beaten path. There doesn't seem to be any of this in FC2, except finding an occasional diamond case somewhere. There's this huge gameworld to explore, but why bother when everything is clearly marked on your map?

I occasionally find a new weapon when I go into a safehouse.
Something like a sniper rifle or grenade launcher.

unfortunately they are as bugged and rusty as the ones you pull off dead enemies so "use with caution". and yeah, what this game needs is less roadsigns and big open spaces to explore but since their simulation just ends with checkpoint/car chase there isn't much to do with it. If I could just wander around a little in a big open space. you can't even really drive off-road besides for a few hundred meters 'cause everything is divided by mountains. the most fun thing besides shooting somebody is using the glider but you don't get far with it unfortunately. It's really a shame because the engine and the driving/shooting itself (fire propagation, sprint-slide) are top-notch.
but right now it's enough to keep going further and after hours of the same I had at least one nice little setpiece (defend the barge) a day ago.

Also enjoying this game immensely. However, one little things really irks me, very small but...those god damned signposts. Changing color to point you in the right direction, c'mon are you kidding me? Almost insulting, do they really think even the most basic gamer cannot read a flippin' map? :laff:
That was done so you can drive around without having to constantly stare at the map. I really appreciate that addition. I find in most of those open-world games I stare fixedly at the map while traveling, only briefly glancing up at the road ahead of me. With Far Cry 2 I can put the map away and actually look at the world around me.

that was done since players can't be bothered to look at the map that is constantly displayed on the pda in your car or - god help us - memorize parts of the drive they have to take like "follow road - left - right - left".......
at least let it turn us off, they force "no crosshair" on you on higher difficulty levels but you can't turn off loot glint and stupid sign.
anyways, it's too minor to complain, the stupid AI and checkpoint system is fault enough. I always thought those guys have focus groups. that's what you get if you only let 'em play 1 hour instead of the whole drag of 30.

Just finished the game. I have to say I really liked the Jackal tapes, they're well worth searching out. Well written and well acted, unlike most of the rest of the game IMO.

It all comes down to how much you want to have your hand held while playing. We could also have big arrows pointing out diamond cases and auto-targeting so you don't even have to actually aim your weapons. Personally, I prefer a bit more realism/immersion in my gaming experience, and constantly changing colored signposts pretty much yank me out of my illusion of being "in the world."
With FC2, there's really no excuse for the colored signposts. The map system while driving is actually set up really well - you can look over the top of the map and drive your vehicle without putting the map away. Then, if you need to reference it, you stop, look down, then go back to driving. Kind of like real life, imagine that.

Rubbish.
Real life is that lovely lady from the GPS sending you through a fence and a river due to "programming hiccups". :sly:
