I'm at odds a bit here, but I think that I've decided that I can't stand this game. I hate the respawning, the feel of the guns (no single shot/burst?!), the feel of the vehicles, the malaria, the "sepia tone" look, the turbo-voices, the Canyon Labyrinth version of Africa, etc. etc. The mission-based play is a cool idea, but the way it works in this game plain sucks.
STALKER isn't perfect either (to say the least), but it is much better than this game. STALKER has incredible atmosphere, FarCry2 not so much.

Anyone playing with the map editor? I don't think I've had a serious try at making maps since the original Quake, but this thing's pretty awesome.
One of the first things I did was go into the map editor ... and make huge piles of explosives to blow up.

did you install the AMD/ATI hotfix + new drivers ?
I'm running XP-SP3 everything on very high/high and did not have a single crash, and fps stay above 35fps.
I did, it reduced the crashing but it still crashes, I have fallout 3 in the post now so I'll play that instead while waiting for a patch for FC2. Its a shame, I think I could get really into it but don't want to as I know I will end up replaying bits over and over every crash.
EDIT: for some reason now the crashing has reduced massively, however over the period of about 30 mins play everything except the sound will hang for about 5-10 seconds and then carry on. It gets worse and worse until its eventually hanging more than I'm playing, so I just restart it.
One other thing that I have yet to understand is, why is this a squeal to Far Cry? There appears to be no relation to Far Cry itself so far in any way (story, character, etc), I don't know if that changes as the game goes on though.

there is no connection to FC1.
ubisoft just took the name, the idea of "exotic" locations and the open-large environment + AI to shape their own game. and it is a good one. I finished it this weekend (according to the statistics I played 27hours), I repeated some missions to see different outcomes or just switch playstyle (mortar or sniperrifle). the game has practically 2 endings and I preferred the last one much more than the "twist" before. it was a little "can see that coming" or "no, why did they do that?". I was a little numb in the last levels, getting that "only a few minutes left, gotta finish it" but it was a good game in the end. I played on hardcore, gonna replay on infamous if that changes anything.
many gamey elements and un-finished or not-thought-through things hamper this game, make it repetetive and although the story evolves around you through how you play (more exact: who you let die) it doesn't make much impressions on you 'cause you only are given decisions that don't change anything. AI is a little stupid and overall it's a little easy. weapon upgrades and degradation are integrated bad and gimmicky, have no real impact and should have been left out alltogether. what works is the toolbox they give you to approach firefights and the elements that make funny and awesome things happen.
better than your average shooter with a nice story (although delivered badly). if they would have concentrated on a few better setpieces and more diverse missions where you don't have to help out your buddy EVERY time after he f*kd up his part of the deal this could have been golden.
but I'm gonna replay it after deadspace although I can see me cheating diamonds only to not have to do so much boring sidemissions for new weapons. all in all it has a little of the slump of Assassins Creed but they managed to make the side-missions and collecting seem more logic and diverse than in AC. but they are still not there. just a little more story/structure for me and less artificial barriers making the maps truly sandbox instead of just wide corridors.

The more I play, the more I appreciate the environment in this game. It really is fun to just drive around (and preferably through and over your enemies). Once it a while, it's great to just go on a driving rampage and take your jeep off a cliff or into a river (I think I actually flipped once, it happened so fast).
Part of the fun is also figuring out the best path to get to your objective, based on the landscape. Sometimes by bus, car/truck, by boat, and sometime just by foot, or combinations of all of the above. (also handgliding, just found my first one). Severely addicted to this game now, Fallout3 has actually been thrown on the back burner (for the moment).

Fallout 3 could sure as hell use one of those dune buggies ;)

You mean the ones that were supposed to be in Van Buren? :p

I liked loot glint bitches!
I did tone it down a bit, but I did like it, it opened up a little comic-style bubble in my head with Bender from futurama saying: "Ti-he-he-he" every time I saw a loot glint.

Hmm, I don't see anything in there about fixing the widescreen issue. I can't believe they left that out. :nono:
