Er what stealth worked fine in the demo i played of far cry 1, infact it was one of the most positive aspects for me, that you could sneak past everyone and also climb up the mountainside (using that stamina bar thing to do that was a bit hit and miss though). It wasn't really a problem hiding from them that much as far as I remember.
Of course it was a bit disappointing having to get into the scripted fight sequence when the door was being unlocked but still it's a shooter so I guess you have to expect something like that. Even in the firefight, the ai was quite interesting too.
I still don't know why people slate far cry 1 so much on here, unless that demo was somehow far far better than the actual game, although I can't really see how.
Yeah, I liked the stealth in Far Cry. It was a bit too punishing in terms of sneaking up on people, but I didn't find detection to be at superhuman levels.
The best part of Far Cry for me was when enemies occasionally lost their footing. I'm sure it was a bug, but it always looked quite convincing because the times when it happened were in the heat of battle with a guy up on a roof or in a guard tower. Sometimes they'd just move forward a bit, miss their step and plummet to their death at my feet.
Also, Far Cry had the best death ever. When the laughably designed trigen monkey things slashed you in the stomach and you started to tumble as the screen darkened...wooargh. It was visceral, man.
I haven't played FC2. Probably won't either. Those guard posts sound like the sort of thing that will drive me to suicide.

Digital distribution customers are getting the premium Fortune Pack DLC for free. Steam and Impulse patrons should've had their copies auto-patched by now. I'm not sure about Gamersgate though.

FC2 has kept me hooked for about 3-6 hours every day for the past 10 days and I just finished it. Great game. It does have a load of problems but no complete showstoppers. It's problems have been chronicled extensively in this thread so I'll focus on what it gets right. The shooting is good, the stealth works well and it feels very rewarding when you manage to sneak into a camp and complete your objective without getting noticed. The driving-physics are barebones but driving in this game feels very atmospheric. Bumping along a dense jungle dirtroad or a desert-trail just feels right. And are you guys kidding me about the signs being too in your face or what? I navigated by map at the beginning and thought the red signs simply were red because they pointed to cities or something. First in Act 2 did I figure out that they changed depending on your goal.
The guardposts are annoying at first but with a bit of planning you can avoid most of them, just keep in mind all your options: car, boat, buss, on-foot. And even if you have to go through one it won't be a big hassle with some planning. Especially not if you have a truck with a mounted grenadelauncher.
Apparently I wasn't being a very good friend because my buddies kept disappearing on me and I was without Rescue Ready buddies from the middle of Act 2 onwards. My last real buddy was Frank, I was supposed to help him fend of attackers at the end of a mission but when I got to the location he was nowhere to be found. I killed all the enemies on my own, then ran around looking for him, or at least his body. But nothing. This game is fucking grim. It actually gave me nightmares about killing people. Your buddies keep dying around you and all you do is keep killing people and fucking them over. For money. Your character's redemption at the end feels a bit out of place, but at the same time, with everything he's been through, it's hard to see how else it could end. There's no riding off into the sunset at the end of this tale.
Overall I'll give it 8.2/10

First time I've seen this topic!
I really enjoyed Far Cry. Once I'd finished the game a few times, I thought I would get bored but I found myself going back again and again. I would use the cheat codes and sneak up on groups underground. It was extremely satisfying to shoot someone in the head from miles away from underneath a mountain!!!
Then came the problems. First I lost the case it came in so I couldn't play MP. Then, while installing Far Cry 2, I lost the actual CD! I'm sure they are both around this disaster area somewhere, it would just take a professional Archaeologist to find it!
I enjoyed Far Cry 2 in a different manner and finished it several times before I raninto a problem with it too. I was being very careful to pick up all the diamonds because I wanted as perfect a score as I could achieve when I was given a 'quest' to rescue a foreigner from the Brewery. I followed the quest marker, arrived at the Brewery, killed all the surrounding horde, and went into the first door of the building where the foreigner was kept locked up.
There was a door inside where I had rescued the prisoner severl times before but it wouldn't open!
There is no way to resign the quest, there are no other quests to take until that one is finished, so I'm basically screwed. Has anyone come across this? I quit playing for quite a while after this but have recently gone back to star over again. I kept the last 4 saves from my previous game, however, in the hopes that someone would have a solution ...

Are you absolutely positive that you killed everyone? The enemies can wander pretty far, and plenty of times I've overlooked some wounded guy that crawled away behind a rock or something. If a single person is alive, you won't be able to open the door, so scour the area thoroughly before you assume it's a bug.

I was pretty sure I had but it will be easy enough to check again, just scroll back to the last time I saved that game.
Come to think of it, there was another problem. There is a guard post on the main road near there that has inflamables; gas bottles, gasoline cans, etc. When I first tried to ID it using the map/spy glass it flickered to show the icon for inflamables and then back to whatever the default was. Even after killing everyone in the immediate area so I could stand right on top of the box where the ID should have been (and had been for previous games) it refused to be identified.
I have a feeling that the two problems are related somehow.

I'm pretty sure I know the guard post you're talking about (south of the brewery), and I've never been able to get it to register as "scouted," even when I've actually picked up flammables from the pile. I never got stuck on any missions, though, so I doubt it's related.

That's the one but it never failed to ID in previous games ...

Are you sure? I rescued 2 buddies(in Sediko and Brewing Co., respectively) without killing or alerting anyone in the camp.
