Thanks for the notes, Chade. :thumb:
Let's hope they're not full of shit about it like Ken Levine was.

Well, I guess it's the sort of stuff that's always going to be easier to talk about then to do ... we'll see. And even if they implement this stuff then it might not have the sort of impact that they want. I just like the fact that they're trying.

The problem was that Ken Levine went on and on and on about "moral choice" and it turned out to be painfully obvious hamfisted bullshit that would make Bioware feel like their intelligence was insulted.

Reading about this stuff now is kinda spooky and exciting. This and things like Clear Sky with their open factional relationship gameplay of various sorts sound so much like what Looking Glass was planning as the basis for Better Red than Dead and Dark Camelot. They were scrapped in favour of Thief but the factional theme carried over and, from what I gather, would have returned into the gameplay in Thief 3 (had it lived. Of course, you can see what's left of it in Deadly Shadows).
These open sorts of things are exactly where I thought games should be at years ago, but things have been mostly disappointing in that time. Fun at times and even good, but ultimately disappointing. I was probably overly optimistic about what could be achieved. Still, playing Stalker was like some bizarre timewarp (probably no accident it was concieved back in 2000-01). And now Far Cry 2 of all things picking up the ball and looking like it just might run with it. It's like the other foot has finally fallen. It's great. I hope they manage it. (I really should play Oblivion at some point I guess *cough*)

first real infos and 20min gameplay:
over 100 missions
50 km2
30 weapons
50 hours of gameplay
60 locations (i assume settlements, towns)
you can fix your vehicles
you can perform surgery on yourself
buddies help you, give you missions in a safe house (where the bed is)
mission updates GTA style thru a cell phone
exploration rewards you diamonds for buying better weapons
(but no mention of traders or where you get them)
ammo is placed around the map, you don't seem to need
to buy it, if you got the gun you get the ammo you want it seems.
you have a bed to forward time
1min gameplay == 5min worldtime
the glider is still in, hurray
dynamic signs show you the way to objective by getting "red colored"
location/district/gameworld maps
you can tag structures/vehicles with binocs
.....
and so on.
still looking strong ! I'm anxious. release date still fall 2008

That footage didn't look that amazing to me. Not that is looked bad either but it just looks like Far Cry 1 with better tech. The gameplay is not really that different you go from base to base choosing angle of attack and tactics with plenty of optional ground to cover.
Fixing cars and self surgery look like they add nothing to the gameplay except making you press or hold down a button from time to time while the same canned animation plays.
That all said it still looks like a fun beautiful looking game but I'm not seeing the ground-breaking game alot of people seem to be. Of course there is, I assume, alot left unseen.

I'm disappointed. I hoped the gameplay would be more involved, but it's just spray-and-pray with instant heal.

i would never expect ubisoft to put out an "realistic" tactical shooter where one false step can kill you. and a game convention demo is all about action and explosions. nothing can beat STALKER in terms of scope and atmosphere but this looks like my kind of GTA without the tedious socializing :)
won't break any grounds but still better than an 8h linear shooter with static enemy placement. I'm gonna buy it only to use that glider and land on the head of a sniper :)
(of course only if the copy protection is "ok")

Yeah or "insert-any-game-with-jungle/savanna-theme" but with much-better-everything-graphics?

I never really cared for Far Cry or Crysis just because the linear gameplay and levels (yes you can explore a tiny bit more than the average shooter but i wasnt impressed).
This looks way better, i love games like STALKER and Boiling Point, gameplay seems to be just up that alley, with fractions etc and you can choose which missions to do (side missions), can sleep, day night cycles (not many shooters has this), exploring is very open-ended like Boiling Point.. and best part: no loading.. only Boiling Point has accomplished that before in a 3D-game and that was probably one of the bigger reasons i enjoyed that game so much, the immersion was superb compared to just about any game.
It's not groundbreaking but anything that resembles STALKER more than the COD or the average on-rail-shooter is good in my book..
Really looking forward to this and the STALKER expansion.. STALKER's setting is just so incredible much cooler than this though.
