won't break any grounds but still better than an 8h linear shooter with static enemy placement.
Purely a matter of opinion and personally I just love a great FPS whether it's a linear shooter (HL2), a more sprawling affair (STALKER) or a hybrid (SS2). All approaches have there strengths and weaknesses and I wouldn't want to just play one style forever.

Yeah or "insert-any-game-with-jungle/savanna-theme" but with much-better-everything-graphics?
Actually, from the video, it has much more in common than that; the gameplay looked exactly the same just woth bigger optional jungle bits. Now I realise it is probably just due to the demo they were showing, which gave no indication of side missions, how interesting exploring will be (if it's just dead space like Oblivion etc then what's the point), how factions work etc. I haven't read any of the previews and only watched this video on RPS because of the comments attached to the article. These are just my initial impressions and I haven't made my mind up about the game at all. Infact I'm probably going to check out some of the previews now.

What do you mean dead space? They cant fill up every inch of the map with enemies and loot, that wouldnt even be exploring, exploring is all about seeing new landmass and once in a while finding loot and enemies to fight.. Oblivion has great exploring, but Morrowind was better since it had a more varied map and more varied "cultures" to see.

What I mean is if it's just the same enviroment over and over with little in the way of unique landmarks, debris etc ala 'Oblivion' than it's just dead space or padding. 'Morrowind' was much better in that regard due to the varied cultures etc and 'STALKER' had landscape that was great to explore, infact it was the highlight of the game.

FarCry is like a corridor shooter except the corridor is now very wide. The fact that it remains a corridor shooter, however wide it is, renders the freedom of movement moot.
This isn't actually true. There are plenty of levels where you can basically skip major portions of battles or fight different battles if you want. The game is surprisingly non-linear. I mean, yeah there's only 1 way in a level and 1 way out, but within the levels it's fairly non-linear. At least for the outdoor levels.

The sad thing is the world looks great, the physics look great, the sense that there could be great exploration is there, but all it is is shooting.
With an engine this good I'd rather an epic rescue drama, racing against time to save someone trapped up a mountain or something. Anything but a shooting purge and burn.

i hope they sell the engine, GSC-game world picks it up, crosses it with the x-ray engine and adds in a little code from the new Auora engine and then they use it to make a new apokalyptic fps/rpg hybrid cyberpunk game. (you can't make STALKER prequels all the time).
still, i like what I have seen so far. it certainly a progression from FC1 and as I see it, now there will be no levels so it will give you much more freedom than the first time around.

That link has a RIDICULOUSLY huge picture on it, and took forever to load, even on a 7 megabit cable connection. Just a warning to folks out there w/dialup or whatever.
vurt on 6/10/2008 at 11:48
PictureS + it's not like you're stuck there until it's finised if you notice it takes a long time (which it does, at least a minute on the 2mbit i was on when i found it).
Edit: on this connection (24mbit) it took 30 seconds..

Pretty huge pics, as described, but they're excellent scans of the review in question. Decent review, hyperbole-filled to be sure but still enough to get me excited considering as this game has been long on my radar (despite hating Far Cry and thinking Crysis was fun for about a day or two). I hope I can run the damn thing. Is it the Crysis engine? I can handle that.
