I've watched the first four episodes of
Cowboy Bebop, I think, and while I didn't dislike it, I'm not over the moon with it either. Does it get better or does it simply take some getting used to?
It's not quoted as the best anime show ever made for no reason; but having expectations from hype is its own problem. So to temper that: it's a show that knows how to tell a story well, but has a few issues with pacing early on. Those first four episodes are essentially setup, yeah. You stopped at an unfortunate point, really - it only makes its real motivations known after episode 4. It's mostly character-driven, so whether you like the characters they've introduced is going to be a large factor in your overall opinion of it.
Also, that soundtrack is easily on my list of 10 albums I would take with me to a desert island. It's brash, eclectic, memorable, and impossible to decouple from the fabric of the show - which is as it should be, given the title.

It's one of those shows that's good to marathon maybe. I know people turned off by individual episodes, but taken as a whole it stands out.

Cheers. I'll continue with it, in that case. My main problem to date is that the dub, while competent, also feels pretty generic. I did like the music and the aesthetic of the series, though, even in those first four episodes.

I don't care if he faked it, no cuts and blood spatter and a grim fucking atmosphere with tons of background detail? Sold. Also some action I suppose.

Dearie me. Please watch it with the original Japanese VO; I've not heard the dub, but in my experience it's almost never the ideal way to watch a show. ((

Here’s hoping I can actually watch it in the original on Netflix. In Switzerland, sometimes it plays silly buggers with shows that aren’t in English in the original, offering only the English and German version.

Mostly it gets worse. One of the most damning assessments of the field of anime serials is that Cowboy Bebop is regarded as at or near the pinnacle of the form.
Sulphur on 22/9/2018 at 16:15
Eh, you've got to have a really jaundiced eye to wave away a genre that contains films like The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Spirited Away, Wolf Children, and Tokyo Godfathers. Those are pinnacles of artistry and storytelling in any category of film. It's like saying sci-fi as a whole is shit because 2001: A Space Odyssey is considered a genre benchmark yet contains 10 minutes of yawn-inducing psychedelic imagery.

A fair point, but those and others I'd cite are all films, not serials. Edited my post.
