… have heard that some crazy guy/girl here uses the wasd buttons also and NO mouse at all …
HEY! … Are yeah talking about ME?!?!
I played Thief using
WSAD for forward, backward, sidestepping and
Directional Keys for looking up, down, turn left/right.
Eventually, I asked a key-binding question and was shown the folly of my ways … But not before quitting Thief in frustration during the underwater section of INTO THE MAW OF CHAOS … *mimes screaming silently* … Back then, I was sharing a 20GB HDD PC which meant I could only keep ONE game installed at a time and I was eager to start Thief 2.
Yes, I'm also saying I never *actually* finished the last level of Thief … DON'T LOOK AT ME THAT WAY!

I love my configuration and it goes like this:
First of all, my right hand is almost always working with a mouse which has 3 buttons (2 on each side and the scroll working as a 3rd one).
Thus, my LMB (left mouse button) = attack
MMB (middle mouse button/scroll) = run forward
RMB (right mouse button) = backwardAnd the scroll is used to search the inventory forward/backward (that's where I access all the items, keys, compass etc)
My left hand is usually, well.. using this diagram as a guide ((
http://www.programmingart.com/products/key/keymanual/images/handsForManual.gif)) I can tell you which keys all of my fingers are using.
left thumb: usually on the space key (= jump), but whenever I need to crouch, this finger switches to the c key (= toggle crouch)
left index finger: usually on the d key (= strafe right), but occasionally moves upwards to the e key (= lean right)
left middle finger: usually on the a key (= strafe left), but occasionally moves upwards to the q key (= lean left) and also the w key (= lean forward)
left ring finger: isn't doing anything basically, I could use this as an alternative to pressing the left shift key (= walk forward), but mostly it's done by the left pinky finger
left pinky finger: this I use for switching between 2 keys / 2 slower movement modes: left shift (walk forward) and left ctrl (walk forward very slowly). so, out of the 3 speeds that you can use in Thief, these 2 buttons work as the slower speeds, while running is assigned to the mouse (by pressing scroll as I said earlier)
I access all weapons either by their default keys (the numbers above the letter keys) or by cycling through them using the page up and page down keys. Backspace clears the weapon in hand (whatever I'm currently using).
The ´key (just left from the backspace key) clears the inventory (so I don't see the stuff in the bottom right corner). Whenever I need to drop items, I use the delete key. And enter (= use) for interacting with all objects, doors, unconscious bodies. Alt+s for quicksaving, alt+l for quickloading, escape to go into the menu, m key to see the map, o key to see the objectives.
Rarely used keys include the + and - keys to zoom in and out and the * key to reset zoom.
So, as you can see, my configuration is mainly movement oriented, because I feel it's one of the most important things in Thief and I'm so accustomed to using this layout/configuration that I couldn't imagine otherwise. All are welcome to try this out if you feel like it :)

I just use most of the default keybindings, but I always set crouch to 'f' like in T1. In T1 the ctrl button never worked for 'hold crouch', but 'f' always worked for 'toggle crouch' so I'd always use 'f'.
