I was addressing Aja and anyone else who "comes to it after the hype expecting the second coming"... it was kinda the first line of my post. ;)
Anyone else is just a bitter old coot.
Like you.

See, but I was all excited about it, not expecting disappointment at all. A lot of the humour in Portal had this kind of grating gamer-culture style to it, and the song was just the culmination. Not that some of it wasn't genuinely funny, but it could've been way more subtle at times. I would've enjoyed Portal much more if they didn't occasionally abandon the atmosphere in favour of the obvious joke.
Then again, Psychonauts was totally unsubtle at times, but tenfold funnier. :erg:

Wasn't Portal written by one of the guys from Old Man Murray?

In part, yeah.
Anyway, Scots basically sums it up and if you don't like Portal then you probably vote Republican and harbor inappropriate fantasies regarding children.

That's the other thing, the Weighted Companion Cube. I seriously don't understand how that became popular (and apparently neither did Valve, which didn't stop them from capitalizing on it.) Just one of those fluke things I guess where people fixate on some utterly insignificant detail and blow it out of proportion.
Am I the only person who enjoyed Portal and then promptly forgot about it?
Yeah, I've never really understood the big deal about that either. I never found the idea of the "Weighted Companion Cube" to be particularly amusing. It seems it was just one of those stupid internet memes that pop up for no good reason.
I was also expecting a bit more from
Portal because of the hype. I did enjoy it, but I haven't played it again since. I think the boss battle and a couple of the later levels were by far the best aspect of that game. Everything else was just a bit above average for me.

I tend to vote Republican (I don't consider myself one though). Must be why I didn't enjoy it as much as other people. ;)
I'm pretty sure I don't lust after little kids though, so I suppose not all is lost.

I vote for whoever I damn well feel like and I hate children. Theory disproven.
Scots Taffer on 31/7/2008 at 23:31
But you don't hate Portal, you just hate the geekery surrounding it, IIRC.

Portal itself bored me somewhat and still does, but I don't hate it.

And Morrowind's intro track, because it's just pure Holst in a can.

Loved the end music to System Shock 1, even though its the intro music as well. Still kicks ass regardless.
