Since there is a thread about favourite game cinematics I'm curious what you guys consider memorable game soundtracks/themes. While there seldom is a fantastic cinematic without a good score there are themes that can stand alone.
I just have two here. The intro sequenze of an old C64/Amiga game called Gianna Sisters. There is a version played on a piano here: (

The other is Homeworld's version of Barber's Adagio for strings. It's just beautiful. Though it would fit into the cinematics thread too just listen to the music in this thing here: (

[edit:]Slight correction with the wording and thanks for clarification about the piece by Barber used in Homeworld. It apparently is not the Adagio but Agnus Dei.
Oh and I'm away for the week so I'm curious what gems you guys come up with.

That's Barber's "Agnus Dei," which is an arrangement he did himself. Still a beautiful piece, but I probably wouldn't classify it as video game music since it was written in 1967.
I know it's clichéd to like Final Fantasy music, but FF6 has some of the best melodies ever written for video games. Not to mention the opera sequence.
But the first game whose music made my jaw drop in disbelief was Outcast. The Moscow Symphony and Choir did an amazing performance of beautifully written music.

Giana Sisters was a great game, I liked it a lot more than SMB, although it was of course unashamedly derivative of it. There's a pretty good remix of the song made by a Swedish "SID metal" group called Machinae Supremacy (

As far as great game music goes, Diablo II had some nice stuff. I also love Daggerfall's music. Just listening to a MIDI from that game takes me right back.
Oh, and Ultima VII had my favorite versions of the Ultima classics :D

Quake 1 was my introduction to dark ambient.
Kelly Bailey's work for Half-Life has gotten better with each installment- Abandoned in Place (the seige theme from E2) is probably the most incredibly-well-placed song in the entire series.

Every "Goldeneye" and "Perfect Dark" music track, every track in "Outcast"
I couple of tracks from Resident Evil 2 like the save room, library and the alarm track at the final level.
Some Thief music like the main theme, Keeper's Grotto and The Haunted Cathedral crying noises.

For me it is easily the soundtrack from 'The Dig'. I absolutely love alot of the music for 'Mokey Island' too, particularly the theme tune.

The soundtracks to the Silent Hill games, everything Jesper Kyd has ever done (He did the soundtracks for all the Hitman games as well as Freedom Fighters, and a bunch of other game soundtracks), and the intro theme song to Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Akira Yamaoka's work on the Silent Hill series, Kelly Bailey's work on the Half-Life series, Yoko Shimomura's work on Parasite Eve. The string quartet soundtrack of Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is also exceptionally well-matched with the game.
