I dont know if this fits in with the discussion or not, but is anybody here a fan of Coheed and Cambria?
for those who arent they're a ProgRock band that morons keep slapping the emo label on. The singer has created this whole little universe that he authors a graphic novel about and its pretty intense, and their music is basically the soundtrack to the story. Though more than a score is almost more of a series of songs in musical. Its great stuff.
The reason I mention it is I'm wondering if anybody here thinks it would make a good video game (for those who are familiar) it would have a decent soundtrack if they did... after all I've already heard it.
Plus its pretty geeky sci-fi. which has me all over it.

So it's not a Harry Gregson-Williams orchestral bullshit that's totally forgettable?
He didn't actually write the theme song; Norihiko Hibino (who composed half of SE's music) did.
And in any case while Gregson-Williams tends to make, of course, a lot of forgettable orchestral bullshit, his Metal Gear stuff is pretty good. Not that you'd know, of course, because you're an elitist who doesn't properly think out what he's saying before he posts.
also, fuck this nuprog bullshit. Coheed and Cambria are basically what would happen if Rush woke up one day and decided to stop caring. Fuck Coheed and Cambria. And fuck Dillinger Escape Plan, too, by the way.

Not that I want to argue, but i'd really like to hear you qualify that statement, based on something other than spite.

What's to qualify? They sound like Rush without any talent. And it's hard to ignore the fact that they're basically riding on Rush's coattails when you consider shit like 2113.

I was just curious as to why you felt the way you did thats all.
I'd debate but that would be getting off topic from this thread and it's all just a matter of opinion anyway.

I second Unreal and to a lesser degree Unreal Tournament, also
Warcraft II,
Starcraft,
Quake 2,
the Final Fantasy series (I own the soundtracks to 7, 8 and 9 plus the two vocal albums Pray and Love Will Grow),
Ys in all its various incarnations,
Katamari Damacy (never played the game but damn the music's fun to listen to, those tracks always bring a smile to my face),
Outlaws,
Total Annihilation,
Command & Conquer series (well, at least everything Frank Klepacki did),
Xenogears/Saga (I have the Pain/Kokoro single from Xenosaga pt1, maybe I'll buy the whole soundtrack someday)
Has anyone ever played the Legend adventure game Companions of Xanth (from 1995 or something)? Just an average adventure game in terms of quality, but it has some really catchy MIDI tunes that I really love. I recently bought the CD-ROM version for like 10 bucks, disabled all the sound effects and speech and am now playing through the game in DosBox, recording videos every time a new piece of music plays, then extracting the sound from the videos and making MP3s of them. A lot of trouble, sure, but that's how much I like those tunes.
I also tried extracting the MIDI files from the game files, that worked but the instruments are all wrong, so that's why I'm doing it this way.

I'm not sure whether it's my favourite, but all of the music from Beneath A Steel Sky seems to have been playing from a subconscious playlist in my head for about fifteen years.
EDIT: Look what I just found - (

I can't let this thread continue without contributing what I think is the best 8-bit soundtrack of all time: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmGp_uMqAoo) Shadowgate.
The track starting at 3:05 brings back fond memories of being an eleven years old, spending the night at a friends house during summer break. It was 1 in the morning, we were playing the game on an old wooden console TV, and eating freshly popped popcorn. Man...that's some hellacious nostalgia right there.

I tried out Blizzard's new Echos of War set. ((
http://www.echoes-of-war.com/)) ... while there's some pleasant nostalgia there from Warcraft 2, Starcraft, and Diablo, overall none of the music in the set seems as good as the original tracks from the games. (The zerg inspired track is especially disappointing.) The parts I remember seem to come in ten second spurts, surrounded by either unrecognizable variations or outright new content. The stuff from the games I haven't played (WoW, SC2, DIII) didn't really strike a chord with me at all. One track is even supposed to be inspired by SC: Ghost, which seems odd... why include a track about a canceled game?
Overall it seems that the real value of this set is the fancy collector's box with the book and cards and DVD and so forth, none of which I have, and none of which I really want. I can never have enough music. Stuff, on the other hand, well... storage space is at a premium.
