Of all the forums to not have Alexander Brandon's work mentioned, I never would expect this one. :nono: Crusader: No Remorse/Regret, Tyrian, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex... classic electronica.
Blizzard should have stopped making video games a decade ago and just have stayed around to make music and CGI videos. Warcraft II, Diablo, and Starcraft have classic soundtracks.

D1's village theme reminds me of Opeth. Which is not a bad thing at all.
Fun fact: the guy who did Arcanum's soundtrack also did that goofy little 80s-synthpop song that is the PS2 Half-Life's menu theme.
Also enjoy the stuff Sonic Mayhem did for Quake 2+expansions. I have a guilty pleasure for synthesised guitars.

My favourite game music is from the Katamari series. Genre-wise, it covers everything from (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DzBzbEEsOw) lounge-jazz to (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGZm-F90w7Q) dance to (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yar6KrVokYI) experimental ambient, but it's so expertly collaborated and produced that it somehow feels cohesive. Listen to (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwyfeksaeG8) Katamari on the Rock for a taste, but man, there's so much more. Yeah, they're silly and Japanese, but it seems as though at least an equal amount of effort was put into the music as into any other aspect of the game. Most importantly, it's the only game music that I actually listen to on an equal level with the commercial records I own -- I mean, soundtracks like Psychonauts are cool and all, but they rarely contribute anything other than to evoke a sense of nostalgia for the games. I'd recommend the Katamari soundtracks to music fans who aren't even aware of the games.
And, of course, nothing beats Thief (all three of 'em) for pure ambiance.

And who doesn't like the Katamari music? :) I prefer the Loco Roco soundtrack just a little bit more, though. Let me poke through what I have rated as 5 stars:
Well, pretty much every Ys game has great music, especially Ys III/Oath in Felghana. Of course, these games rarely get translated and aren't that popular even when they are, so it's not the most common choice.
I also find myself enjoying Shoji Meguro's soundtracks to the Shin Megami Tensei series (specifically, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1/2 and Persona 3). Generally enjoyable modern-ish much.
Chrono Cross is good, as is Xenogears.
I enjoyed the soundtracks to Dark Cloud 2 & Rogue Galaxy quite a bit as well.
And you can't forget Unreal :) (and you even mentioned Unreal Tournament on its own?)

I actually really love the Bioshock score also. It may be a bit short but I listen to it all the time and I didn't even like the game that much so it isn't good vibes from the game influencing me. It was some of the best music of any type I had heard all year.

Bioshock is easily my favorite ever, it's a pretty big departure from the wannabe Holst and Williams scores that most games (or films) have. The Thief series and the original Quake have pretty incredible soundtracks as well.
