I've been quite surprised at the number of quality soundtracks I've heard in games; they can add an incredible amount to atmosphere.
My two favourites are probably Icewind Dale (Jeremy Soule) and Baldur's Gate (Michael Hoenig) are the best I've heard. Without them they'd just be mildly diverting isometric RPGs, with them they are amazingly atmoshperic.
Others I've enjoyed:
Tomb Raiders 1-4 . I think it was Nathan McCree for 1 & 2, can't recall the other composers
Drakan. (kind of swords and sorcery Tombraider)
Rainbow Six / Rogue Spear.Admittedly it's more like incidental music, but added a lot to the tension.
American McGee's Alice (Chris Vrenna) I even bought the soundtrack!:thumb:
Thief 1 & 2.Have you played these? They're quite good.
Patrician 3. Trading game with great rennaisance era soundtrack
SimCity 3000. Had this bit that sounded a bit like Gershwins Rhapsody In Blue, and suited it perfectly.
Quake 2. I've largely moved on from heavy metal but I'll admit I felt like making a Dio horn gesture and generally behaving like a hard rockin' dude.
Bear in mind though that I haven't played any recent games. Vintage 2001 PC you see:tsktsk:
Worst soundtracks ever must go the Jane's Combat Simulations of the late 1990s. Huzzah! No I don't want to listen to an upbeat Latin number when I'm flying an F 14 against a Mig 29 thanks.

I thought the music from Freedom Fighters captured the mood perfectly.

You just reminded me: Nuclear Winter's theme from Freedom Force still cracks me up every time I hear it.

I like the occassional game that manages to get in one or a few good jazz tracks ... SimCity games did this (Sim copter was awful in every way, but I loved the jazz track), Civilization 3. I like the music Nifflas puts in his homemade games (Knytt, etc...). Also: Homeworld. System Shock 2. A lot of what other people mentioned.

Chrono Trigger
^ This.
Super Metroid also has some good stuff, particularly the underwater section and the pirate ship.

* Pirates (both the original version, which came with some hilarious notes such as 'the tuba player obviously brought the wrong music to the rehearsal', and the recent remake)
* Anything Frank Klepacki scores (he did a good job on C&C: Renegade when he updated some of the old favourites)
* Colonization (really fitted the mood of the game)

God damn that game looks awesome. What system did that one come out on? And is there a english version of it. I`m betting no. Reminds me alot of Alundra 1.
And here I was thinking that the Ys series which started on the sms ended with Ys 4.
