Yeah, Baldur's Gate 2 was great too. Icewind Dale 2'smusic was terrible though.:p
Can't help but notice that a lot of these games listed (most actually) are older games. Was the quality of game music better back then, or are you all a nostalgic lot at heart?:cheeky:

Most of the game scores in my collection are my own rips.
Since there is not much time for me to replay oldies, some of them loose appeal in the competition with newer titles, at least I can listen to their OSTs and remember the old times when I played it. *sniff*
But if I generally like some game, I usually like it's music as well.

The problem, Brian, is that a lot of game soundtracks these days are some Harry Gregson-Williams orchestral bullshit that's totally forgettable.

GTA IV, Its not everyday you hear bands like Nitzer Ebb or Sisters of Mercy in a video game.
I love the music from the old Ultima games and the main theme from Deus Ex - brings back good memories..

God damn that game looks awesome. What system did that one come out on? And is there a english version of it. I`m betting no. Reminds me alot of Alundra 1.
And here I was thinking that the Ys series which started on the sms ended with Ys 4.
It's a PC game, and it has a fan translation. Due to a lot of drama about leaked previews of the translation, the translator is a little miffled so it's only actually available for a donation (but absolutely worth it).
There's even a (
http://www.himeyashop.com/product_info.php/products_id/1762) special edition you can order which comes with EIGHT soundtrack CDs. EIGHT! That's how I got it.
There's also Ys 6: The Ark of Naphishtim, which WAS translated and released over here for both PS2 and PSP, but I hear the PSP version is plagued with loading issues. The fan translation may or may not still be available for the PC version due to the official release; you'd have to look around if you wanted to go that route.

Or, to look at it from the other direction, when you can't rely on quality audio output from the system, you have to create catchier melodies/more interesting textures to take up the slack. Modern technology has made game composers kind of lazy.

Besides the obligatory Thief/SS choices, the Wheel of Time game had really good music. Kind of dark Celtic music with some rocking in it, surprisingly good. Very little synth.
Tribes2 also had great music, but it is probably mostly due to nostalgia, great kind of heavy techno.
