Modern technology has made game composers kind of lazy.
I don't know how much has changed since 2001/2 in the technology to compose music (this is an area I don't know anything about), but the music in the Serious Sam 1 games is fantastic imo. Catchy and have good sound quality.

It's a PC game, and it has a fan translation. Due to a lot of drama about leaked previews of the translation, the translator is a little miffled so it's only actually available for a donation (but absolutely worth.
Proper proper PC version? Or PC engine? I know of the pc engine remakes of the original 2 games (Ys 1 complete and eternal). I`ll definately be looking up that game in either case

Well, Serious Sam was made specifically as a throwback to FPS's of the early 90's.
But modern games can have good soundtracks, too. The Halo series has some pretty excellent tracks (even if the games themselves are mediocre), and Shadow of the Colossus had an excellent combination of grandiose orchestra and silence.
But it's so easy anymore to make soundtracks "good enough" that we don't get quite so many great ones as we did. Also, we've forgotten all the horrible games/soundtracks of yesteryear, which helps make the past seem saturated with awesome.

Little in terms of creative process. Except that we have faster and cheaper computars to make muzick.

Quoted for the books. It's only the good examples that stick out in our minds nowadays. I remember a few games with some pretty bad soundtracks and not surprisingly those games have fallen into obscurity by now. The X-Com series comes to mind for me.

Besides the obligatory Thief/SS choices, the Wheel of Time game had really good music. Kind of dark Celtic music with some rocking in it, surprisingly good. Very little synth.
Oh god, how I loathed the Wheel of Time music. It may have been perfectly listenable on its own in a NuEnya, rockin' ren faire kind of way, but in-game it was a jarringly inappropriate accompaniment to the fast-paced shooty action.

I'm not sure about favorite, but memorable music scores are Deus Ex, StarCraft, and Max Payne.
I also remember the old Donkey Kong Country stuff from Rare in the SNES days. Anyone has the OSTs? The stuff on the internet's incomplete.

Proper proper PC games, as in it runs on Windows.
Also, Ys Complete and Eternal are also Windows games, FYI, as is the latest-latest game, Ys Origin, but that has no translation.

Yeah, Max Payne's music was memorable. Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity also had pretty good theme music.
