can't pick just one, so...
the stronghold theme from 'heroes of might and magic 3'. it's a dramatic and inspiring piece but it creates such a surge of longing [for adventure] in me that l almost tear up. the rampart theme is very good as well.
the intro from 'morrowind' is a bit simple, musically, but damn does it set the mood for adventuring.
the 'halo' theme. somebody get that composer a major motion picture to score. also the music from the halo 2 teaser.
just about all the music associated with warcraft- the themes from the warcraft 3 teaser and the intro cinematic for WOW, the 'hold' music for wow when you are logging in/configuring a character/waiting for a server, and the teldrassil incidental music are all fantastic.
the piece from the final cinematic to 'thief-dark project'. l'd love to hear it arranged for an orchestra.
the intro from 'myth- the fallen lords'.
glacerne and dragon's lair from 'dungeon siege', among many others.
don't know the name, but the track from 'syberia' when you get in the train and head east is just gorgeous.
l don't know how many of you remember the 3do platform, but 'slayer' had possibly the greatest soundtrack of any game l've played. it was a pretty straightforward fpv dungeons and dragons dungeon crawl, but the music was so good it still stands as one of the most memorable games l've played.

My fav was the Deus Ex main theme for a long time, but recently got replaced by the Bathhouse theme of Splinter Cell 3 - the "The Clean Up" track from the OST. Though they are quite different and of course there are lot of other good game music out there.

There are a couple of game music that I like, but since the only thing that I can get my hands on are midi files I'll have to say Chrono Trigger is up there. There's 1 song, called Schala's Theme, which I might of listened to for about 8 hours straight, go ahead and give it a try. (That might explain a few things). I also like 'People who threw away their dreams', 'Singing Mountain' and a few others. Amongst my limited SNES collection I find that Final Fantasy 6 has very good music, so does Star Ocean and Bahamut Dragoon and Terranigma. Front Mission : Gun Hazard also has excellent music.
Lunar 2 is another great soundtrack, all of it is amazing, I have the orchestral version. Lately I've been listening to old Sonic music and they're also pretty good. Xenogears is one PSX game that has very good music as well. MGS is also all around good.
There's a few PC games that have really good music but I don't remember. I've recently downloaded some StarCraft and WarCraft 2 songs, but they don't seem that great anymore, good nostalgia when you first start listening to 'human 1' again however. I'll be keeping a close look on this thread. And here's a link with a huge collection of SNES tracks, you'll need to download an .spc player for WinAmp, it should be available at the site too:
(
http://www.zophar.net/zsnes/spc/)
I still have a lot to get from there myself.
PC games : Gabriel Knight. Ragnarok Online, an MMORPG also has a great soundtrack, all of it(its big) is in .mp3 format in the game folder. Give it a try, very distinct music.

I love the intro soundtrack for Neverwinter Nights. The one that plays at the title screen. It just sounds so epic. It reminds me of the main theme for the movie Conan the Barbarian.
Anyone know a good website where you can download the soundtracks for Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3? I did a search on Google and couldn't come up with anything useful. Just blogs, fan sites, etc. Nobody had the soundtracks available.
Particularly, I am looking for the nature songs that play in Heroes 2.

Hard to put one at the top but at a push it'd be: Thief TDP endgame.
Plus I love a lot of the ambients like Shipping and Receiving and Trail of Blood.
Other favourites:
- Hitman 2: Silent Assassin's Main Theme, Waiting for Action, Japanese Mansion and Dreams of Istanbul.
- Grim Fandango's Casino Calavera, Smooth Hector, Hi-Tone Fandango, Blue Hector and Temple Gate.
- Monkey Island games backgrounds and themes (<3 Le Chuck and Scumm Bar).
- Deus Ex's Hong Kong and other ambients.
There are others I'm sure, like even stuff like Super Mario Bros and Sonic that are fun from an old-skool perspective but not to listen to ... more like ringtones for your mobile and such.

What, you're going to make me CHOOSE?
Sign. The Metal Gear Solid ending theme is fantastic, as is lots of stuff from Xenogears, but . The Soul Blade intro is also excellant, and I think Soul Calibur is good too, but I can't remember how that one goes. Shame about Soul Calibur 2 & 3's intros, as they're far too contextual & not as interesting overall. I also really like some of the music from Digital Devil Saga (Spider's String : Second Movement), Growlanser Generations (Merciless Front, Zion's Battle, Angel Skip, Wandering, To your Tommorow), Lunar, and Phantom Brave (R & R Junkie). How's that for random? Oh yeah, Katamari is definately awesome too. Katamari on the Swing, Angel's Rain, Katamaritaino, and Que Sera Sera are some of my favourites there.
Super Nintendo-wise, Actraiser's Pyramid music & Northwall are both favourites, as is most of the Ys music (Ys 5 especially). The Zophar archive is fairly typical, but I find (
http://www.snesmusic.org/) SnesMusic is generally better, as a MUCH higher percent of the tracks have the proper titles and durations filled in there (not to mention Composer info and all that stuff). Oh, and the Final Fantasy intro theme is typically known as the "Prelude", and I'll throw my vote for it too (especially in FF4 & 6). Some of the music from FF1 was amazing too, like the Chaos shrine & Matoya's Cave.
Going for PC stuff, Stones is definately classic, as is just about everything from Torment. Tyrian has some of the best music I know also, and let's not forget things like Relentless (LBA), Myst, and even Populous 3.
So, you're making me CHOOSE? GAH!
Fine, I choose "Rusty Anchour", as sung by Glottis.
Seriously though, I have no freakin' idea. Here's five random pics that are definately up there somewhere, you can try something from them if you really must have one:
Lost Painting (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) (or Wandering Ghosts if you prefer)
Delita's Theme (Final Fantasy Tactics)
The Great Virtue Of Gathering Mana's Spirit - Theme Of Mana (Legend of Mana)
Theme of Rena (Star Ocean : The Second Story), though We Form In Crystals fought hard for this spot.
Gathering Stars in the Night Sky (Xenogears) : though I could list almost a dozen songs from this game that are very very close.
Crap, I ran out of choices and I didn't even leave my Playstation folder. Ah, whatever, I'm done.

The highly atmospheric background music for "Diggers" on the Amiga CD32.
And... Most of the music from all the Broken Sword games.

You can't pick just one. But right now I'm listening to "Bloodlines" by Ministry, and it's pretty fuckin' cool.

The full version of this. The ice world is a close second, because this is the theme that plays as the intro credits roll and the camera pans and FUCK YOU WORLD I WANT OUTCAST 2. :(

Obviously, the Grim Fandango soundtrack FTW. I installed the game two weeks ago just to get more of it. It's a shame that the game's so short when you know it by heart, though.
The music from Deus Ex is good too, though I don't really like the combat music. It gets on my nerves. Hopefully I can avoid it most of the time.
