The mini-crossbow takes TOO LONG to take effect. By the time it knocks the guy out, hes either running away - possibly sounding guards - or shooting me and i have to slice his throat!

A little revision the stelth pistol is now my friend. It can do headshot take downs with one bullet has to be dam accuarte though (shoot for the ear and maybe face) plus is it me or does the tranq darts work quicker if they hit the face of your target???
frozenman on 21/1/2001 at 18:27
Similar to the last post, i find that the sniper rifle is more effective if you shoot your target at the base of the next.

My take on the weapons
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifFlamethrower:useless on most occasions. heavy, slow unless you invest in heavy weapons (read:waste of skills points) completly useless against commandos and almost worthless against mibs.
Plasma rifle:useless
Gep gun: handy if you don't mind using the space. I used it on my second way through when I was using mainly the sniper rifle and the pistols just for fun
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifassault rifle: worthless unless you spend mods on it to elimate the insane recoil, but your better off using those 4 slots to carry other things and using the mods on other weapons.
gas grenades: great for taking down masses of soldiers if you don't want to waste a lam. Just toss it in their midst and start capping them in the head by one as they stand by helpless.
All melee weapons aside from dragons tooth and cattle prod:useless except for opening crates.
cattle prod:invaluable
standard pistol: good weapon when modded considering it only takes up one slot, my primary weapon the second time through.
stealth pistol: also a good weapon due to its silencer and high rate of fire.
Sniper rifle:invaluable.
Sawed-off: my primary the first time though. Takes up less space then assault shotgun and assault rifle. Can fire sabot rounds and is generally deadly as all hell once you get its clip boosted (as always, go for the head
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifassault shotty: oddly enough, I never used this to its recoil. Might be good When you start adding mods, but you get it a bit late in the game, and by that time your weapon of choice has enough mods invested in it not to make it worthwhile.
emp grenades: I save these for groups of spiders, works wonders.
lame:duh
laws: useful if you don't carry around a gep gun and theres bots in your way, drop something if you don't have space, blow up the bot, come back and pick up what you dropped.
Mini-crossbow:very useful at the begining of the game, I never used it much after around midway. maybe because of the increase of commandos and mib.

(It was only after I posted this message in the Hints section that I saw this topic in General Discussion, hence, sorry about posting this twice but, then again, it does fit in both...)
Is it just me or trying to use the crossbow for a "silent takedown" leads to a great deal of frustration?
It's understandable that a terrorist, if shot at with a Tranquillizer Dart, would begin to think that something is afoot and start to get suspicious. It's even understandable that, if there is a buddy terrorist nearby, he would call for help and both start looking for anyone suspicious in the vicinity.
What I don't understand is how, after shooting a terrorist with a Tranq Dart and quickly hiding from sight (i.e. leaning against a wall to get a clear shot and then leaning back, out of sight), the terrorist instantly KNOWS where I am and who I am, starts yelling "Fascist! Pig! There he is! It's a cop!" etc., shooting in my direction and, if there are other terrorists nearby, they'll soon be converging to my location, thus ending my attempt at a "silent takedown".
It's mind boggling and VERY frustrating, especially if you're used to the AI of games like "Thief".
Does anyone experience the same frustration?
Or am I not being reasonable expecting to shoot a Tranq Dart at someone and just wait for him to fall to the ground without alerting his buddies?
I agree that, in some locations with three or more terrorists, it would be natural that the terrorist, while the Tranquillizer has yet to take effect, would start running around and alert some of the nearby terrorists, what I DON'T agree is that said terrorist, after being shot at, would immeadiatly turn to shoot at and chase me like it instantly knows where I am and who I am.
For someone trying the stealth approach, the Crossbow + Tranq Darts are very important and if they are this inefective, it starts to get pretty hopeless.

I'm going to do a bit of a copycat from Evil_the_katty, and give *my* take on the weapons as well...
Pistol: I always use the pistol. I prefer it to the stealth pistol because of it's higher damage rate.
Stealth pistol: see above
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifMini-crossbow: Love it. Love the tranq darts, and love the regular darts. Great for taking down AI from inaccessible areas. (air ducts, etc.) Also useful for those underwater kills...
Melee weapons - never used the crowbar or baton for anything but crates, but that sword... I didn't use the sword for anything but crates my first time through. But I'm now on my second time through, and
wow, what a great weapon. It does great damage, usually and one or two hit takedown. Plus, its quiet, and no reload.
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifProd: Handy, but I admit to using it with minimal to moderate frequency.
Knives, combat and throwing: The throwing knives kick in MP, but they suck in single player.
Pepper gun / Fire Extinguisher: Not worth the used inventory slot, IMO.
Assault rifle: Hate it. Low damage, too much recoil, no range.
Assault shotgun: Like it - I alwas have one handy. Decent damage, the recoil is a hassle, but the damage makes up for it. Plus, the sabot shells work wonders on those damn mechanical spiders, among other things.
Sawed off shotgun: OK, but I prefer the assault shotgun to it. I don't usually use the sawed off.
Sniper Rifle: Best weapon in the game. I don't think I have to explain its virtues to anyone. It has the added bonus of being able to take out those damn security cameras if you have Master Skill with rifles.
Flamethrower: It is pretty useless. I made the mistake of picking it up this second time around, to see how it would work. Bad move. Now I can't find a friggin GEP gun, which I could *really* use right now...
Plasma rifle: Played with this my second time through too, because it really kicks on the Multi-player. Fairly worthless in a single player game though. Sorry I picked that up as well. Actually dropped it for the aforementioned useless flamethrower.
GEP gun: Carried one around my first time through, and didn't fully appreciate it until now, my second time through, when I realize I have nothing else to wipe out the bots with. Just got up to Vandenburg, and I haven't been able to find another GEP gun...
Laws: Can't stand a disposable weapon. Same reason I don't use the PS20, which I also find useless.
Grenades:
LAMs: gotta have 'em. Self explanatory.
Gas grenades: Didn't use them much first time through, but use 'em a lot this second time through. Good for groups of targets, or setting on the wall and attracting a target to you.
EMP grenades: I use them very infrequently. I'll drop them if I need to make room in the inventory for something else.
Scramble grenades: Not enough of them in the game to make a difference, but they have their uses.
I think that's all of them. Some of these weapons I found work much better in MP, which is why I decided to give them a go in a single player game. I found that they don't necessarily translate well back and forth between the two. What I'm carrying around in my current SP game is: Pistol, Sniper Rifle, Assault shotgun, Mini crossbow, prod, Dragons Tooth, a flamethrower (which I will drop as soon as I find a GEP gun!), gas grenades, LAMs, and EMP grenades.
This is all
IMHO, as well, of course.

I haven't played the full game yet but I'll get it soon. As soon as I played the demo I knew that I had to get this (add any positive adjective) game.
So which pistol IS better?
IMHO In the demo, I found the crossbow to be one of the best and if the steady stream of rockets continues through the game then the GEP gun is very useful. I find the prod to be any good only if the enemy hasn't spotted you or if it is comming around a corner.

Equipping the prod sure makes an upsetting racket in headphones when I'm trying to concentrate on sneaking! Why did they give it such a ridiculously loud equip sound? Great non-lethal weapon, though, once you learn the constraints.

The sniper rifle is my best friend in the game. I love the way it shatters cameras and turrets like glass when you max out your rifle skill.
At higher skill levels, your pistol is excellent for just walking up behind someone and taking them out with a single shot to the head.
A GEP is always nice as well.
The only use I found for the plasma rifle was in the Submarine base. The one you pick up there is great for taking out all the transgenics running around. Seeing as I'd been collecting ammo for it all through the game it was nice to give it some use.

Pistol: Keep it for executions, such as Anna on Lebedev's plane, but it's definitely secondary to the stealth. I can't stand to use it in a firefight, too slow.
Stealth pistol: The only weapon I really can't do without. Fix a laser sight to it and it's just two headshots for a kill, simple simple. Do note that putting a scope on a weapon with a laser sight seems to ruin the laser's in-game effect --you still get the red dot eye candy, but without the scope the laser mods plant the bullet WHERE THE DOT IS, even if you're running and have few skillpoints invested with the weapon. Ammo is plentiful and the rate of fire makes it much more flexible than the standard pistol... much less the point of actually being quiet. I make a point to go out of my way to get the laser on the first level to go with my first stealth pistol when Carter issues it. I also make a point of assaulting the MJ12 armory after I've been captured JUST to get my stealth pistol back.
Shocker prod: Useful little gadget, lots of ammo for it too. This is my MiB-Be-Gone since they don't explode with it and typically carry nice items.
GEP Gun: Flagrantly unnecessary, extremely bulky, and the utter antithesis of "subtle". Not useless by any means, but most certainly not my style. I never met a bot I couldn't outsmart, outrun, EMP, scramble, or just plain shut off.
Plasma rifle: Gimme a break.
Flame thrower: Too sadistic.
Baton: Slightly weak under normal circumstances but very nasty if you're gearing up to specialize in the Dragon's Tooth. I don't use it much other than for opening boxes unless I've got high skills in low-tech (probably for the afforementioned DT specialist).
Crowbar: Don't see a use, prefer baton.
Dragon's Tooth: Nice, very nice. If I had some options on how to swing it ala Jedi Knight (if a four year old game could do such a thing, so could DX), I might use it more. Otherwise it largely takes up space and serves as a box opener/guard thwacker, but I don't like it as the primary combat weapon. Reminds me of JK's lightsaber, now if it were only half as flexible...
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifAlso a good "lockpick" with the combat strength aug.
Shotguns: I know the numbers favor the auto shotgun, but I quite simply like the sawed-off better (down to the point of diving for the one in the sunken barge in the first level). Not my primary weapon by any means, but I do keep it around.
Sniper Rifle: I love it. I love it so much, I've played subsequent games without it and determined that it's entirely unnecessary. But I still love it. Nowadays I usually drop them quite often and make do with those I pick up; I don't keep one onhand all the time. This coupled with the fact that I don't carry any of the heavy weapons at all, nor an auto shotgun, means my inventory is very flexible.
LAMS: I actually don't use these much more than is necessary (i.e. plot elements). Sometimes if I'm feeling short on patience and lockpicks I'll use one to blow a door, but that's about it.
Gas Grenades: These get more use than LAMs with me. I use them to deal with large groups.
Scrambler grenades: You've gotta love something that causes so much chaos in the enemy ranks. I don't use them too often because even the biggest bots are some of the weakest opposition of the game, but I do take great satisfaction in watching their aftereffects.
EMPs: I love these, too. They are to laser tripwires what LAMs are to the occasional door when I'm feeling impatient.
LAWs: Not something I'd carry around "just in case", but the game has a habit of giving you a plethora of them whenever you might need one. I use them here and there when I can't be bothered to go find and hack the control panel for a military bot or two.
Crossbow: Very, very useful little tool, at least for dealing the NSF fellows whom I've always sympathized with. Tranq darts are quite nice with head shots. Normal darts seem a little superfluous but one CAN occasionally run out of pistol ammo if being sloppy. Flare darts I don't use enough to really evaluate.
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifTNT crates are rather like LAWs; whenever you could possibly need one, it's there.
I don't carry much in the way of big guns and I do most of my fighting with the stealth pistol, various grenades, and whatever objects are onhand. This is much more satisfying to me;
anyone can be deadly with a missile launcher.
