The impression I get from the FEAR 2 demo is that it will just be a series of shootouts but instead of leaning left / right behind cover, which they've found to be a bad thing, you'll be "leaning" up and down behind cover. What is it with console games and cover, it's like the gameplay equivalent of lens flare. And every single game has to have iron sights but not really iron sights, a viewfinder with a floating dot in the middle. I guess all people want to do is shoot fish in a barrel but with a scope. It just comes off feeling like the next big console game with all the derivative shit from every other big console game before it, it's sure to sell millions.

Christ, you'd think that shit like this would be obvious. Well you see, consoles don't have enough buttons for leaning. Having one-button context-sensitive cover systems compensates for that. As for games without said cover systems, the mechanics are no different than how PC shooters have been for years, particularly tactical FPSes like SWAT3/4 and Ghost Recon. If you try to run-and-gun, then you're dead. FPSes have evolved since fucking Doom.
Realistically they could implement leaning with the PS3's Sixaxis motion sensors, but that's not an option since the 360 is the lead platform for most of these games. MoH:Airborne's solution was to have leaning whilst iron-sight aiming.
Oh and Iron sight aiming was one of the best innovations to hit shooters in years. FYI, it was pioneered by PC exclusives like Call Of Duty 1 and Vietcong. I played through MoH:AA + its expansions last year and Christ that game would've significantly benefited from iron sight aiming.

There is so much wrong in that post I can't even bring myself to point out specifics.
Edit: Well here's one:

No.

There's at least one gun in the FEAR 2 demo that has iron sights and no scope. Irons sights in general are kinda useless though unless a game actually models shooting from the hip, a'la Brothers in Arms or Operation Flashpoint or America's Army or whatever.
Iron sights are definitely way better than the CONSOLE LIKE zoom function in the original FEAR (I never really understood why they went with that instead of actually having you look down the barrel or scope).

QFT
And I am, ironically, in the middle of playing 2 console (xbox 1) fps games w/leaning. One is Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I could list dozens more.

I like iron sights but they aren't a step forward, they're just dressed up crosshairs. But that's not my point, it's that consoles games have become so predictable that their conventions end up feeling like a crutch.
If you're making a console shooter you have to have iron sights now and it should probably have a cover system too. An offhand grenade throw is nice and regenerating health too. How many games fit this description? Now FEAR 2 is one of them.

I don't see how actually having to look down your gun to fire an accurate shot is a console thing. Especially since it's been done on the PC for over 10 years. Being able to fire with perfect accuracy from the hip with a crosshair is one of the silliest FPS conventions anyway, so even if it were some sign of dumbing-down-for-the-console-tards-lol-m-i-rite having inaccurate crosshair firing and iron sights seems like a good thing in a game whose primary focus is shooting things.
The cover-system thing is silly in a first person game, although outside of the the last 007 game I can't think of an FPS that uses one. On the other hand, the cover-system in Mass Effect was great and felt appropriate for a third person RPG. Of course, in relation to FEAR 2, it's not really relevant since it doesn't use a cover system.
Also, strafing is your friend when you can't lean. I'm assuming you've played the 8 million classic PC FPS titles without leaning at some point and have figured that out though.

It's not a sign of dumbing down in itself, it's just one thing on a checklist of for the next-gen game requirements.

FEAR 2 gives you an option to create cover from various objects and I expect them to exploit that throughout the game. It's a cover system.
