F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate versus Project Origin - by Digital Nightfall

So I beat F.E.A.R finally, and Extraction Point too (got them in a bundle). Can anyone tell me what the water contamination arc was all about? I didn't seem to get that.
I Liked the game, sure, the environments were kinda sameish but the gameplay was fun, I especially liked some of the soldiers lines, "He's too fast" when using slow-mo etc.
The scary scenes were hit and miss, some were great, sometimes they just fell flat, but I'll never forget firing an entire clip into the phantom Fettel at the bottom of that ladder :laff:
One of the wasted opportunities of the game for me was the actual execution of the F.E.A.R. forces, there wasn't anything special about them, no Ghost Busters type equipment for dealing with supernatural stuff etc. They even ruined a good opportunity with Jin in that one scene with the bloody room, when asked about theories she should have sprouted some pseudo-scientific babble, that would have made the whole thing a bit more credible.
Another wasted opportunity is the "you're Alma's son" revelation, they basically spoiled it at the very beginning of the game with the "What's the first thing you remember" vision - I'd leave that until much further in the game
Extraction Point I think improved on the game, with slightly more varied environments, better freaky bits too, with those things crawling on the walls etc. The plot for was rather thin though - and Fettel's "I know this doesn't make sense" line came out unintentionally funny.
I wonder whether they'll be using any of Extraction Point in Project Origin, as it was partially made by Monolith - the plot synopsis on (
www.nameyourfear.com) only covers the basic game however.

I think they'll stick with the original game only - yes Monolith was involved in XP, but the plot for that is just too crazy, and doesn't really provide for a decent continuation.
Anyway, I happened to play a bit from the retail version of Perseus Mandate, and to my surprise, it's actually quite good. Not as much as the original and xp though - it's weak point is definitely the level design, which seems more monotous, and uninspired, but it pretty much has everything else that's required for some good FEAR gameplay. People say it's longer than xp, plus it's very cheap (around $20 here). I think it's worth it if one's a FEAR fan (like me).

Perseus is rather good, it actually becomes better and better the further you go..level design certainly is lacking in the beginning but luckily becomes better and better.
As always I don't really care for the horror elements (yawn) and the story doesn't involve me once but I still enjoyed it. More so than Crysis..

spoilarz for people who haven't finished:
many people who lived in the south river area were chronically ill or nauseous, particularly around a location shortly downriver from the treatment plant, which as we discover at the end, is a block of warehouses fronting for the old origin project lab. a task force by armacham was sent down to investigate, but they find no chemical contaminants in the soil or groundwater or any other logical cause. we can surmise from this that those who fall ill are not so due to the water, but due to psychic radiation from alma, whose corpse is stored in the origin lab.

I should be getting Fear PM this weekend. I am big fan of the original Fear and EP. So I can't wait to get this.
I still have to finish BioShock, HL Episode 2, and Crysis. So I am going to be busy for the rest of the year.

Having just finished the full Perseus Mandate tonight, and as a big fan of FEAR, I would like to say with emphasis that it is SHIT.
Yes, shit. I won't get into spoilers at this early point, but it either contradicts or doesn't mesh well with much of the original FEAR story, it suffers from dull, repetitive level design, the creepy bits aren't, and even the awesome, sweet FEAR combat is crippled by large chunks of many levels, particularly later in the game, that are empty. And not the tension-causing kind of empty you find in the early bits of Shalebridge, but rather the "where the fuck is everyone?" empty you experience when you're an elite, razor-edge super-soldier with more firepower than God and there's nobody around to shoot.
The new enemies are a joke and virtually indistinguishable from the Replicas (except that there's a greater variety of Replica soldiers), the new weapons are unimpressive, the plot is complete and utter nonsense (you think the original plot was weak and convoluted? It was fucking literary gold compared to this garbage) and when it's finally, mercifully, all over, the game doesn't end so much as just stop.
I know none of this will stop anyone who's determined to get it from blowing their money, but consider yourselves warned.

A lot of people said that Fear Extraction Point had repetitive level design and was just basically more of the same but I enjoyed it anyway. Although, I found the combat in EP much more tougher in some areas.
Something about the atmosphere and the story that just draws me in. I guess I am just a fan of the Jupiter engine.

not me. that damn thing struggles a bit on my 7600GT with everything on. the only way i can make the framerate something not noticably shit while still retaining image quality is to crank it up to a very high resolution and turning double-pixels on. problem is, this deactivates soft shadows.
