5-button mice have been around long enough and their distribution is wide enough to expect native support to be a given. Especially since most major PC exclusives since 2004 have done so, including FEAR 1.
It's like not supporting the proper Horiz+ FOVs for 16:10/16:9 aspect ratio monitors in this day and age, like Far Cry 2 and Bioshock prior to their patches.

Yes, except the game (and just about every other game) is perfectly playable with a simple 3-button mouse. I'd hardly call that a "fundamental basic."
Try again.

Sure most games are still perfectly playable without that feature, like they're still playable without mousewheel or even mouselook, hell most of them are even playable with a gamepad. But because it can be done doesn't mean it's any fun.
Personally I always use the two side buttons on the mouse whenever it's supported by the game. So while it's not a "fundamental basic" it's one of those standard features that helps making the gaming experience more comfortable. Besides it's supported by pretty much every PC game out there, so some of us have become used to it.
So when a game doesn't support it, it feels like something is missing, kinda like sequels or spiritual successors that don't feature leaning when the original did. Oh wait...

What the fuck is this shit? Listen to what you are saying. You're comparing 5 buttons on mice to mlook. Where mouselook is a fundamental basic, 5 buttons is not. Granted, at least you recognize that it's not a fundamental basic, unlike our local RSSbot. While I can understand being used to having 5 buttons, if the lack of support for one is a *~gamebreaker~* then maybe one should just go play console games which all use the same controllers.

Yeah, and like I said, even a cheap 5-button will come w/software to program them anyway. I makes no difference whether it is native or not.

Is there any way to disable auto-pickup in this or original FEAR?

AFAIK, both games will pick up weapons until you reach the limit for what you can carry. After that you have to pick them up manually by replacing a weapon in your inventory. Is that what you're referring to?
