Alternately, nobody expected the blast to be THAT huge- something you could blame on Alma, actually. And I don't know where you get the impression that the ENTIRE district was abandoned- there's evidence in the very first game it wasn't completely abandoned. More to the point, it's not like you're spending the entire last two games in the Auburn district. Alma's effects went way beyond the blast's minimum safe distance, and there's a lot of people who've gone mad, almost completely taking over the suburbs.

The clever enemies(sadly, limited a bit by corridor level design) and slo-mo elevates it from the dumb shooter pool.
Thing is, the enemies are clever exactly because of the corridor design. The AI works because of designated cover nodes placed throughout the level and those branching corridors which makes it look like they're flanking, but it's a side-effect of their planning system. Wouldn't work all that well in an extremely open environment.
And yup, Fear's the best one out of them all. Brilliantly dark story told to you in bits and pieces, and great combat.

I had read the "non-canon" statement, but I consider the non-canon statement to be non-canon, since it didn't take place inside the game. ;) Besides, it was Day 1 Studio that contradicts plot points from the expansions (Monolith's own Rebirth included... guess that's non-canon too). I didn't find anything in Fear 2 that conflicted with the Timegate games.
The treatment of Becket in Fear 3 was very poorly written. Maybe it's just me, but I always imagine the silent protagonist type characters to be perpetually calm and level headed, so even when they're finally given a face and a voice they need to be fairly steely. Seeing Becket going out of his mind was unwelcome. Putting a large emphasis on his role in the story only to end him like a redshirt was anticlimactic and boring. This is the message that I got: The Day 1 guys liked Fear 1 but didn't like Fear 2, and they were going to rub it in our face.
Giving Pointman a face made sense. He and Fettel are supposed to be male clones of Alma, aren't they? So they should look identical. And in the rendered cutscenes they did - Pointy was just Fettel with more hair and a beard.

Oh fuck, I just realized a bit about Fear 3 I loved and hated: the Force Commanders. I liked that they taunted you, and were boss characters in their own right; fighting them was at times very tense, especially in the container maze, where I was forced to rely on hit and run tactics; but at the same time I felt these fights were kind of a pain in the ass, especially the container maze. They went on far too long, and I was quickly running out of steam. They are very much endurance contests, and that's kind of sucky.

The boss battles against mechs were far worse. Especially the very last one, that took forever to die (no, I wasn't doing something stupid like facing it on foot). I kept strafing around the one container, using hit and run tactics like you said. It was a really tiresome battle.

Oh christ that last mech boss. Spent most of that fight just keeping that central pile of junk between us so he wouldn't shoot while my ride repaired itself.
The ones on the highway weren't too bad though. I did have to get out at one point 'cuz the helicopter was giving me trouble, but once my mech had finished and I was able to get back in and finish the job.

Replaying FEAR 1. Just as good as I remember, though the plot is deeper than I previously gave it credit for (probably since I never paid 2 shits of attention to it before.)

Welp just bought FEAR 1 and 2. Never played. They'd better be good dammit!

One of my greatest gaming memories is slow-mo killing a clone and hearing the loltastic 'FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK'.
