Male or female; it doesn't matter. They're all equally mean and/or stupid and deserve to get blackjacked.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty strange, getting rid of coloured guards. Black characters opened up the idea of a more multicultural society in The City, and it's a shame they've gone.

Before I say this, I should like to say that's I'm not a racist.
Also before I say this, I should like to say that I thought the uniforms of the city watch were more out of place than the people that were in them.
Okay, here it is. I thought that black people in the city were a little out of place, since they'd have to come a long way to get there. Given the thief world, I'd say that was too far.
I always explained it away be thinking that they were turned pagans (or the children of turned pagans) and god knows what the woodsie lord has been up to. It still seems a flimsy excuse though.
While I'm happy with the addition of female guards, I don't think they should have been in such large numbers. There should have been significantly more males than females (with the exception of the mechanist order, they were wanting lots of recruits, I imagine that would be a good recruiting ploy).
Oh, by the way, for those who don't know, I am actually a girl myself. While that shouldn't make any difference, it does.

I hope your nephew was kidding. Otherwise he doesn't sound terribly bright.
He might've been kidding, but I wouldn't put it past him.

The addition of female guards and black men to the Thief universe in TMA did seem like a bit of a calculated attempt to enhance the game's "diversity", but in the end it did nicely enhance Thief's alternate-history vibe.
Calculated? That's open to your own interpretation. As if having female enemies would make more girls play or something :/ don't be silly.
I always felt "the alternate history feel" is what they were actually going for.

At first I kind felt negative about it, but it is so much a part of the game now I don't care -- I even like it. I am very fond of the voices of the Mechanist women.
However, it didn't bother me that T3 went back to all males.

I'd say he's pretty on-the-money if he's talking about the real world. Only in fantasy worlds do women knock around men who are far stronger than they are.
Of course, if the woman is holding a gun ... that changes things a bit.

Exactly.

What this means is that first and foremost you are a Thief player. You would still play Thief even if it was all male guards. It is the gameplay and concept that draws you in. Not how "gender balanced" it is.
Too many designers (males mostly) just assume that adding women in places is going to appease the female crowd. They don't realize that if they are playing your game -- you have already won them over. There is no need to go overboard to be inclusive if it harms the legitimacy of the game world.
I am black. It never bothered me one bit that there were no black guys in Theif I. Hell, there arent' a lot of black dudes in
any game.
So what? I love to play ... that's what I am there for.
Of course I ain't saying that it wasn't cool to see some brothers working with Karras.

YOU said that, not me.
Strawman much?

I do believe 'ol Zylon meant diversity among the characters in the game, not the playing audience. :cheeky:

I liked it because I thought it helped reinforce that the Thief universe is meant to have its own social dynamics and history separate from the real world. The diversity in the cast of guards sort of underscores that the setting is more than just a quasi-medieval version of Britain with some magic and steam engines thrown in.

I'm all for women guards ... makes a change... missed them in Deadly Shadows.:nono:
They have such a harsh and cold voice, especially in the French version and I love it when they say to Garrett : YOU'RE MINE !!! :o
very sexy and appealing lol :tsktsk: and they're harder to beat than male guards:joke:
