I want to say it was a painting of a guy walking through a huge set of dungeon doors into the caves the game takes place in.
Al_B. Thanks for that link. I haven't been able to track it down so far. But if it's anywhere, it's there. Somewhere.

My memories of it are pretty vague, but I'll try my best. First off, I bought it back during one of my old elementary school book fairs, so it had to be published sometime during the 80's.
Now I doubt if anyone can tell me what it was I played based off the few small clues I've given. But if someone can, and they give me a name or a link, I'll forever be in their debt and let them borrow my car indefinitely or something.
One clue from me. It very well may have been published by Scholastic, since they were responsible for the vast majority of those book fairs.
How old are you? I'm 34. Do you remember the monthly color newsprint catalog/order forms? I used to stare at them like a Christmas catalog, all weekend long and usually ordered at least 3-4 books at a time. I was a big reader.

I started writing my own RPG system as a result of playing gamebooks, but I don't think that lasted more than a few pages before I got distracted! I'm pretty sure it <strike>would have been awesome</strike> sucked.

Hands up, who started writing a gamebook after reading Fighting Fantasy but never finished? I sure did! :D
lol. I wrote up like 3 of them (all incomplete) back when I used to read the books. They were really terrible, but it was good fun writing them.

Yeah, the Lone Wolf series was awesome, although I only ever purchased the first 8 instalments. There was a mod released for NWN years ago that recreated the first 3 or four books. It was definitely one of the best mods that I played of that series.
The NWN mods were actually set prior to the books and covered life at the monastery prior to the attack which wiped out all kai besides yourself. The first actual Lone Wolf book ("Flight From the Dark") picks up directly following the attack.
The NWN mods were awesome I completely agree with you there. Back when I last played them, the third and final one was incomplete and ran out of content not long into it. All 3 upto that point were heaps of fun to play though. NWN ingeneral had shitloads of good singleplayer mods really.
A few years back when I discovered the wonders of ebay, I set about getting the complete collection of all 27 books. Took me QUITE some time, and a fair bit of cash along the way, but I eventually completed my collection. The last 7 books inparticular cost a fair bundle each. Worth it though as their all excellent books. Even if you can get html playable versions authorised by Joe Dever.

(
http://gamebooks.org/show_item.php?id=956) FOUND IT! After painstakingly combing through multiple listings, I found it simply by looking for the keyword "cavern". So there it is, bought at a Scholastic book fair when I was 8 or 9 (I'm 30, Gunsmoke, and I remember those Scholastic catalogs quite well).
Wow. Memories. Thanks again for the link, Al_B. I wouldn't have been able to find it without your help.

Seconded. Those nagging thoughts when I can't quite remember the name of something from my past drive me nuts. Always a relief to figure them out.

Excellent. I was visiting the parents, and I remembered to have a hunt for the old collection, and successfully tracked it down (40+ books in all, most of them FF or related). I'll follow up later on with a photo :)
Sure does bring back some memories. I'll definitely have to replay a few of them at least (and, you know, maybe play some of the ones I never actually got around to...)
