I'm sure everyone here has had a couple of good experiences with the old Choose Your Own Adventure books. I know I have. I used to grab 4 or 5 at a time from the school library and play through them all over the weekend.
I remember playing one where I was lost somewhere and when I chose to get a lift back to town the people in the van turned out to be insane hippie commies on drugs who murdered me. I then became unduly paranoid (was only little). I guess you could say I had a bad
c.y.o.a. trip.
'Steve Jackson's Sorcery' are an excellent 4 parter fighting fantasy epic that I highly recommend.

Well I just finished re-playing FF#3 "The Forest of Doom", which was the first book I ever bought in that series. I actually managed to complete it in my first attempt, courtesy of (a) rolling pretty damned well (medium stamina, very high skill, and maximum luck), and (b) the game permitting you to wrap back to the starting point if you reach the end without the two items you were searching for. I had found one of them late in the game the first time through, and located the other early in the second pass, after which I more or less made a bee-line in the direction of the finish :) I may have cheated mildly -- the game didn't make the offer, but I charged myself 5gp to restock my provisions at the town before returning to the beginning, because I'd lost them all in an aquatic misadventure, and it seemed a pretty reasonable thing to be able to do.
I think I'll press on and play another one.
It's amazing how evocative some of those cover illustrations and blurbs could be to a young kid. Some fantastical image combined with the knowledge that you'll get to take part in how the story plays out, plus all the game elements (stats, dice rolls, map-making). In fact, with that pre-knowledge in place, sometimes just the title was enough: "Starship Traveller", you say? Hell yes.
I remember particularly enjoying the books that added in their own unique mechanics. I definitely intend to play "Appointment With FEAR", "Freeway Fighter", and "Sword of the Samurai" for that reason. Especially AWFEAR -- seriously, why the heck weren't there more game books where you played a super-hero?!

Anyone remember Choose Your Own Adventure books? Those were as far as I delved into the genre. I have fond memories of those books.
Read many of those before I discovered the more rpg gamebooks. Couldn`t stand the choose your own adventure books after that.
