It took me a while, but I finally got pretty good at fighting in T1/T2. Dealing with guards was just a matter of circle-strafing them and bonking them repeatedly with my BJ as they hollered, hoping I'd get lucky and end up with an "Unconcious Body" rather than a "Corpse".
Similarly, although I hate, HATE, HATE the undead :erm: I at least learned to deal with them. I perfected my step-in-step-out whack-a-zombie technique while avoiding their slow-moving but incredibly painful karate. Haunts I would just backstab for an easy kill whenever possible.
Now I'm playing Thief: Deadly Shadows. And I am horrible at fighting!
Humans I don't have to deal with, since I'm not killing any of them anyway. But the undead (at least the two I sparred with for practice in St. Edgar's Church) are giving me headaches. For starters, It's bad enough that a zombie can get to its feet in a split-second. I can't find any good technique to either 1) zip in, get in a hit, and zip out, or 2) quickly circle-strafe behind them for some cheap backstabs. Everywhere I run, they're right behind me, always facing me, and lunging out to steal 3-4 hitpoints.
Can anyone offer me some fighting tips? Because I have a sneaking suspicion ;) that the two imprisoned undead in the Hammer church aren't the last ones I'll be meeting.

Uh... fire arrows? Holy water? Flashbombs?
I don't really know WHY you would want to try and stab a zombie with your dagger. Or why you would want to let those two zombies in St. Edger's out of their cells.

Well, yeah. I'm just trying to plan ahead in case I run out, and have to rely on my combat skills. So, are you saying that if I run out of equipment, I'm better off just reloading a saved game rather than trying to fight?

Just practicing for the main event. :D

Honestly, despite all the times I've played through Thief III, I've never tried to duke it out with the zombies via the dagger alone. I should give it a try next time though, just to see how long it would take.

I guess I just got used to it in T1/T2. I almost never flashbombed or fire-arrow'ed zombies. They were slow and clumsy enough that in most cases I could just whack them enough to drop them, then tiptoe around them so they wouldn't wake up again.
If that sort of thing just can't be done in T3, I'll just have to learn to use my equipment more.

The AI in TDS are faster than you are by a long shot. I suggest RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY.

Well, this is supposed to be a stealth game, so if you can consistantly succeed with this course of action, I say it's a bug. In TDM we will be playtesting this, and although it shouldn't be impossible to take on a single guard, constantly doing this should significantly lessen your chances of suceeding, either through combat directly, or its side effects, such as noise and blood.

Fighting Tip: Don't Fight, sneak. :p

Hmm, fighting the zombies with a dagger. Reminds me of playing Resident Evil with the knife.
Why not lure the zombies into the incinerator in St Edgar's Church?

I killed a zombie with my dagger once. Damn thing popped back up when I stepped over it.
