1. Missing links to the story of Thief 1 and Thief 2:
In Thief 2 there where lot's of books, scrolls and NPC talk related to the events in Thief 1. But in TDS there are only some notes on Karras and the mechanists, but no hidden places of them (like the pagan village or graveyard in Thief 2). While playing TDS I was under the impression, that the "Metal Age" never really took place...
It depends on the point of view. I found Thief 2 - The Metal Age the least entertaining. I didn't like the "Metal age" idea at all. The first few missions were quite boring. The robots were not the right solution for a game like Thief.
Thus, when I played Thief 3 I was very happy to see that the game has the old Thief 1 feeling.

Ok, you can argue about this, but as far as I know, Thief belongs to the genre of Steam Punk, so robots are ok in my eyes...
You also have the electrical street lights, steam elevators an steam machines in general in all 3 games. Or take the clocktower in TDS as example...
And somehow, the robots in Thief 2 are special...I don't know why, but this combination of steam technology and "magic" just worked fine for me :D
From my point of view it would have been quit cool, to see or even visite the destroyed cathedral of Soulforge or a run down mechanist temple.

Well, I don't like fantasy that much, but Thief is an exception for me :)

Climbing gloves are real - they exist.
Rope arrows are fantasy.
It's not a question of which is more realistic. It's a question of which is more enjoyable.
I felt that TDS had maybe too many ties to T1 & 2. I remember every time I turned around I found another wink wink nudge nudge reference to one of the past games. In fact, there were so many that even I didn't catch them all. Ask jtr7 about that.
I am not sure what to say about your impression that the TDS missions were more unfinished than the TDP and TMA ones. I highly suspect that this is nostalgia and not proper recollection. In fact, T1 and T2 were the games that were rushed out the door far before they should have been - TDS got a full term "relaxed" release schedule in comparison.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm as fierce a critic of TDS as they come. However, some things should be set straight. ;)
Silver-ONI, you keep reminding me of someone I know.

I was left wishing TDS was a proper part of the trilogy, where there was less wink-wink-nudge-nudge to the other games and more of a full connection.

I finaly have a machine capable of playing Thief 3. Hardware specs - 1 GB of Ram, Celeron 2Ghz CPU, PCI Intel Express onboard video chipset. Yeah, that onboard chipset makes it choppy sometimes, but it's indeed playable.
So.. the game is awesome and the graphics is great. There are some things I didn't like, for example these awful lockpicks and the loading zones (blyakh). I successfully passed the demo mission, the castle mission and the city mission, going to proceed with the hammerite mission. Overall, a nice game.
I know  On its time I bought the game, but was not a machine for it. Took time while I was able to play with him. A loot of hardware upgrades:erg: But it's a Thief!:thumb:

BT, while the rest of them go off raving and ranting with their T3 Wish List, look into the Ghosting idea for your T3 gameplay. (
http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30310) Official Ghost Rules
And just balance their Rules with the parts that you enjoy or need to do.
(One time on the street, I saw a wizard just BLAST a lady, all to HELL!)
So the next thing that he saw, when he turned towards me, was the flame of an explosive-arrow from my bow to his FACE! :ebil:
And BTW, sometimes you just have to break ghosting to complete a level.
And sometimes, just for the fun of it, I would setup an oil-spill trap. ;)

Raving and ranting? RAVING AND RANTING! Why, we're simply WROTH with wasted wishes! An arrow to the throat ought to shut you up! (Frothing, foaming, fuming, Talifan, fanboys!)
:cheeky:
Oh, sorry.... Did I spit on you?
(Hands the tabby a talismanic towel against unnecessary alliterative hyperbole.)

The Witcher is heavily influenced by this they even have smaller loader zones than TDS: both in terms of time spent in them and size.

Thief III just sometimes seems like a different series than the first two.
But hardly anyone can object that Thief2 seems now like a big add-on for original Thief ;) Modern sequels differ from origins much more than Theif2 did.
