For those who don't know, after a six plus year hiatus I'm back at mission building. The basics have (mostly) come back to me and things are chugging along albeit the ride is kind of bumpy.
I point to my last thread here trying to get a custom torch imported and working properly as an example of how behind the times I am.
So when something doesn't go as planned ...well, that can be a good thing! Since yesterday I've been wanting to update the look of everything that burns. So poking around the custom resources department here at taffer central (it's on the 3rd floor right next to the bourbon, butter and other picture postcards)* I found a lovely brazier compliments of R Soul and Eshakatar. I had just the place for it already mapped out. Delving deep into the bowels of the Obj Hierarchy was never my strong suit but after only a little cursing I got it working a treat.
Now my next task was to update the humble basic torch. So I get to thinking whose mission is ripe for plunder. Hummmm.... Nice things usually come in large packages so via the magic of darkloader I hop right to the missions that weigh in nice and heavy. Soon I have my quarry in sight, "The Drymian Codex" You might think it's something that makes videos play properly but it's actually a lovely bit of kit for a Thief player. Besides Russ owes me a favor so I get to digging in that thang!
So I'm in a sewer (it's always a sewer ain't it...Russ loves a good sewer. Must be a Kentucky thing. I dunno...) and I spot a torch. Now I'm preparing for battle. I open that puppy up and get ready to get torch blood and guts all over me. I'm snapping screen grabs of all the guts! Particle Launch Yadda Yadda, Links you can't golf on...I'm ready to battle all taffin' day 'cause I'm makin' this work and I'm not stopping until one of us is working or dead.
Next up...head over to the OBJ folder. Bin file is easy to find. Next up, unravel the mysteries of area 51...no txt16. OK, I know I'm looking for something that looks like dark grey metal. Ooh!...four .gif files called gray something. I don't care how you spell it, I'm thinking these are just what I've been looking for. Now for the flame. NVflame anyone? I went with it.
So I drop all this in my OBJ folder and prepare for a bit of a struggle. I feel like Jeremy Clarkson confronted with a tool that isn't a hammer. Fire up dromed and zoom over about 50 units to the nearest torch. Whoa! 3D view is VERY interesting. It's all good to go! No poking around getting OBJ H guts all over me! The #&%$^ing thing already works! A choir of heavenly music fills the room. The old torch is history!

Y'know, you can just Send To -> Notepad an OBJ file and all its textures will be near the top in plain text.

And a wonderful sewer it is! I was honored to get my feet all gunky.
Thanks ZB. That'll be a time saver.

I'll bet that line really works on the babes.

I have mine set to open on Notepad on double-click. I've never used the ++ version.

I actually have come to love (
http://www.sublimetext.com/3) Sublime, thanks to moving to web development at my job in the last year (it's very popular among the Mac/Linux Ruby/Rails crowd). I may have to remap object bins, schemas and the like to Sublime instead.

I'll have to check out Sublime. Looks interesting. :cheeky:
