After spending all morning poring over Google posts and those at TTLG, I still can't find the answer I'm looking for. So...
Right now, when I need to open a CRF, I have to rename it with the zip extension. PITA.
Windows 7 uses an NTFS file compression scheme. It's not WinZip (though Microsoft perhaps licensed the engine). So when I right-click on a CRF file and select Properties, it takes me to the ol' "Opens with..." and a "CHANGE" button. Then the familiar dialog opens up with "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:".
Problem is, I have no idea where Microsoft has buried this utility, since I don't know its name. It's not anythingZIP.
I've also gone through the Control Panel/File Properties scenario, where it lists every file extension ever invented and still can't get the CRF to just open up. So I'm hoping one of you Win7 users can fill in the blank spot here.

I've used it before. I'll try it. Thanks, Larry.
BTW, if you look at the file props for a normal ZIP file, it says it uses Windows Explorer to open it. However, if you assign that to a CRF file and then double-click it, the CPU starts maxing out and the cursor starts doing a dance.

That's only if you don't have any zip program installed. Programs like WinZip, WinRar and 7zip should change the file associations when installed.

Indeed, it has absolutely nothing to do with ZIP files. So why even mention it?

You can also freely rename the files to .zip. Dark won't care, and Windows will open them without an external program (though 7-Zip is generally better, the built-in zip support in Windows is rather slow.)

Where would I find a .crf file to try for you...I have Cal 3D...its a crf viewer.

I have just copied the INTRFACE.CRF file from my T2 CD, popped it into a folder and double left clicked on it and WinRar has opened it up..I use WinRar on other projects and WinZip for Thief, all I did was to associate it to the .crf and chose it from a list on browse for a programme.
I'm beginning to get my old head around Windows 7.

Got everything working perfectly. Had to delete every reference to .CRF files in my registry, but such is life with Windoze.
Thanks everyone for the help, especially ZB, whose replies are always poignant and helpful.
