Firaxis + XCOM, that is all. - by N'Al

You can unlock perks for the soldiers as they level up too, which will probably give the combat a bit more of a tactical flavour, especially at higher difficulties.

Did anyone else notice that the only physical difference between the mission in China and America was a small billboard written in Chinese?

The only thing that bugged me was that walls seemed to be made out of cardboard.

I've actually lost all interest in playing the full game.
It's hard to buy into the illusion that the terrain exists when a shot can either hit your cover and destroy it, go straight through your cover and hit you, or go through your cover and miss you without even a simple particle effect. Maybe I'm not avant-garde enough to understand no-clip gunfire and blue shields. :p (And saying that, Silent Storm is now 8 years old and it had fantastic ballistics and destructible terrain.)
Blah, blah - rant, rant. There are plenty more little gameplay niggles that make the experience unsatisfying. I should really play the full game before judging, but that's what a demo is meant to be there for, so I couldn't help myself.

I've just found out about something called (
http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Info_%28EU2012%29) "Second Wave" which basically is a set of options you can toggle at the start of the game (although you have to beat the game once to access it). That's pretty awesome and some of those will definitively satisfy some of the demands of those who feel certain aspects should have been closer to the original game. Here's a complete list of those options:
Damage Roulette: Weapons have a much wider range of damage.
Total Loss: Lose all gear from soldiers who die in combat.
Red Fog: Any wounds taken in combat will degrade a soldier's stats for that mission.
Hidden Potential: Rookies will have random starting stats.
Results Driven: As a soldier is promoted, their stats will increase randomly.
New Economy: A country will offer less funding as its panic increases.
War Weariness: Overall funding levels drop inexorably with every month that passes.
High Stakes: The rewards granted for stopping alien abductions are randomized.
Diminishing Returns: The cost of satellites increases with every one that is built.
E-115: Elerium stores will degrade over time.
The Blitz: The aliens will target a larger number of cities every time they launch an abduction attack.
Absolutely Critical: A flanking shot will guarantee a critical hit.
More Than Human: The psionic gift is extremely rare.
The Greater Good: The secret of psionics can only be learned by interrogating a psionic alien.
Marathon: The game takes considerably longer to complete.
Alternate Sources: The power requirements of all facilities are increased.
Haven't seen that posted here before.

I've gone for XCOM over Dishonored because UFO:Enemy Unknown provided me with way more entertainment than any stealth game ever did.
Thanks to some bureaucratic decision somewhere, currently it's pre-loaded but I can't play it because I'm not an Americanist. But then, same problem for the Dishonored camp. Still, under 5 hours to go, not that I'll be playing at midnight.

I'm loving this game so far. The cover system actually works really well once you figure out what it is doing (reducing enemy chance to hit) and the tactical game gets a lot more deep and interesting further into the game when the aliens are more varied and your squad has more high level characters with special abilities. Each class is great in terms of what it brings to the table.
