Really wish they had the randomly generated maps though....my only real complaint tbh.
Still, I'm grateful for this game, so cheers!

Just found this thread, I dont normally go into general gaming tbh :)
Love this game, free copy of Civ 5 with it etc..(pre-orders only)
I was waiting at midnight and at 6am I had 6 hours in already :P
Good game just wish some things had been more like the original.
I miss some things, its kind of dumbed down for the benefit of the console crowd I would imagine.
No base defense ?
Intercepts are weakened ala only one craft at a time, in the old one you could send a couple and attack together for instance if you had weak interceptors and say a battleship.
The combat is pretty good but the effect of cover seems lacking somewhat. Sometimes they shoot through buildings and cars it seems.
they improved some things at least. All in all I believe the combat in the original was more authentic, I am not saying its too easy because if you play on classic its fairly close imo but its like they cheat to get there.
Grenades, they only use them if your bunched up apparently, I say this after beating the game once already. If you dont bunch up they just dont use em.
Well thats my opinion anyway, feel free to disagree :)

Contrary to popular belief, a car door or even most of a car is not going to shield you from a bullet - maybe if you're behind the engine block you'll stand a chance!
I do like the way cover icons turns yellow if the squad member / alien been flanked, which makes you even more susceptible to damage.
My squad of ultimate badasses still contains the single survivor from the tutorial missions. Even on normal difficulty, it's getting tricky now
the ED209-like robots have appeared. Sectopods, I think they're called? Not the transformer-saucers. Although they're still pretty evil.

Man I feel like I'm missing out. I'm awful at strategy and I still want this game.

It's really good. And hard. It forces loss on you.
Thelvyn on 21/10/2012 at 17:28
Yes loss is a given, if you think you can get through without losing anyone your going to be very very disappointed and waste a lot of time trying.
As far as shooting through things goes they shoot through walls and boxes also, sometimes they are facing AWAY from the squaddie and shoot you that's kinda funny.
I have a concrete example of this, the second mission when they send your guy onto the roof.
First they are shooting up at you at about a 45 degree angle and in order to hit your guy like they do they shoot through the building and the box, but hey its a game right ? I still think they cheat a bit.
Don't get me wrong I love it in spite of its flaws, just could be a bit better is all :)
Hopefully someone will mod it to get rid of some of these things.

There are a few glitches - like you say, firing while facing the wrong direction (usually when scenery gets in the way of LOS), firing directly through walls etc... but I think the fact that cover can be shot through is fine. When you get into cover, all you are doing is reducing the aim stat of whatever is firing at you, not guaranteeing no hit. The fact that cover can be destroyed also adds a good dynamic to the fights - making sure you keep on the move. The aliens don't cheat, they just have better weapons.
When you get the plasma weapons, they have +10 aim modifiers.
. I'm on my fourth game restart now. Re-started due to making stupid mistakes in not fully getting how to play properly in terms of a stable, progressive strategy and I'm finally able to meet the challenge of it in a way which feels satisfying.

I played this game all day yesterday. After awhile it seemed like I was just going through the motions because there was no mission variation. So I shot down the overseer. Which was cool, but as soon as I got on the ground I could do nothing. You see I had painstakingly went through the trouble of creating a psycic squad. Which consisted of three laser snipers, and one of each other class(all armed with laser weapons). Which made me pretty unstoppable versus anything to that point.
After a few frustrating hours I decided to look up the weapon tables. Seems plasma weapons do +2 damage and get +10 to aim. So, the most damaging weapons are also super accurate... like more accurate than lasers. Lasers. :erg:
I could handle the lack of engineering time on items, and the lack of building more bases. I even begrudgingly accept the inability to hire your own scientists and engineers. Though I have been informed that mission variation is better on the higher skill levels, I'm not sure I really want to do it. Just having one type of weapon be the best of the best kind of kills any joy to be had in the development tree.
Soldier promotions are sort of the same. They give you two things to choose from, but the good one is always pretty obvious. I also dislike suppression. No matter the case you can only suppress one unit. It should be a small area effect.
The game is a lot of fun. It's just not the same kind of tense fun I remember from xcom. I even went back and played again, and the game gave me something interesting that I didn't know before. Those strategic surprises are why the original is so awesome. I just think the game suffered a bit from streamlining.
Presentation is pretty top notch. Though I am starting to get sick of the batman violins being in everything.

No, they don't. Only the light plasma rifle does.

Right you are. I just read about the modifiers to enemy aim / crit chance on the higher difficulties. Still, fear not, there are now (
http://xcom.nexusmods.com/) A FUCKTONNE OF RE-BALANCE MODS to choose from if you want the challenging AI / enemy numbers of the harder difficulties without the cheats.
