Firaxis + XCOM, that is all. - by N'Al

The cover system isn't broken, it just acts as a modifier to your opponents aim. You can destroy cover, but only a) with suppression or b) when the dice roll says you hit the person behind it, which is subject to the cover's modifier. Cover shouldn't be indestructible.
Having said that, I've been playing Silent Storm again recently and this game has made me realise just how much of XCOM's mechanics I've been forgiving. Don't get me wrong, I still love the shit out of the game, but it is so very restricted in what the game allows you to do. Silent Storm, while not perfect really gives you the freedom to "try stuff out" and leads to some very emergent game play styles, whereas XCOM just has a list of things you can do and that is that.
Most recent game for example of what I mean.
Flat business roof with decorative edging (dunno what its called) back about 10 feet from the edge of the roof behind an ac unit. The edge of the roof is raised also.
Alien sectoid on the ground so about 15' down maybe ten feet from the walls. Shoots up through the side of the building and kills my guy.
Sorry but theres no way in hell he could even SEE my guy from there. He wasnt on anything close to the same elevation, it was like a 45" angle with not one but two intervening walls/equipment.
I had two other guys on that same building roof later but at the edge so they could see on overwatch and there was a sectoid almost the same place as earlier, mind you they are like ten feet CLOSER at the edge of the roof and guess what they CANT see him!
That kinda shit pisses me off.

That's not what I thought you meant by the cover system. You're thinking LoS is a little borked and I won't disagree with you there. This is why I like Silent Storm so much. If your bullet meets a wall, it either dings off or, if it is large enough calibre, penetrates believably.

Annoyingly you have to beat the game on Impossible in order to access all Second Wave options. I have only finished Normal so I have eight, I think.
Marathon is freaking brutal. It triples research times and doubles basically everything else including item costs, build times, Engineer reqs, Infirmary times...

Does it also slow down alien progression? Or does it mean you are absolutely going to end up assault rifle vs Mutons?

That's an interesting question. But my guess is that it does not. Then again you don't have to select that one if you don't want to.
On another note, randomized rookies are awesome. Just the fact that I can choose the "better ones" (because they all have exactly the same stats without that new option) is cool. That's one of the things that should have been in the game from the beginning. Someone mentioned that with random stats you can actually roll soldiers that move further (9 tiles instead of 7) so that's just another cool thing that can randomly happen to you.

I've always played on Classic difficulty but the other day i tried Normal and it felt like i was cheating hehe.
Back on Classic now. :)
I just bought the Slingshot DLC and restarted my game so let's see what that's about. I like the new hats and helmets!

There isn't a whole lot to it. You do get a hell of a stash of metal and elerium at the end of it though.

I was starting to feel like I was kicking pretty much butt on Normal, then I did that storymission where I use the skeleton key to get onto the alien ship and all my goodest dudes got KIA'd! WHY GODDAMMMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTT WHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY IM A GOOD PERSON WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME
Loving this game btw. When I played the demo I felt kinda like Phatose did up there earlier on the page, but the abstract gamey-ness of it isn't really bothering me now.

So then I commit myself to grinding together a new kickass squad by leveling up my new recruits. I head out on a Very Difficult mission with 5 rookies aaaaaaaand... every single one of them dies. Now most of the world is on fire, I have a handful of rookies left, little resources and even less money. Is this even doable any more or should I just start over from the beginning?
