Funnily enough, I just played the grammar nazi over at the German Eidos Forums in the Thief IV trailer thread...

It is interesting and disgusting at the same time how people are biased so much and simply assume out of nothing.
The BowEverybody goes down about the looks of the bow ignoring its functionality which IS SHOWN RIGHT THERE. It is a bow that can be folded into a very compact and easy to carry object. That also makes it feel like it is something to have and set up to use when needed and not like some full lengh combat bow always ready to kill.
I like the classiness of the oldschool wooden bow, but this looks more like what a real sneak would utilize if it was available. A bow like this is practical, regardless of the looks. The looks don't make it an autoaiming high power killing machine. You're arguing like kids.
The Hood, Face Mask and "Ninja"First of all, he has a tightly sitting hood, something that would be more comfortable and less obstructive than a large flappy hood. I tried both hood styles in real life for myself (unrelated to thief, but it reminded me) and a tightly sitting hood is defenitely much more comfortable, but does a good job to hide the silhuette of a human head and cover the bright areas of a white skinned person.
In this case, I like the hood style, just makes things look professional.
The ninja facemask. If you observe the video, you see he has a black cloth, like a scarf, around his neck, covering his chin, it's most likely the cloth he has pulled over his nose and mouth in the lockpicking scene. Since there is steam and smoke coming from the hatch he cracks, makes me think of that he expected some gases to exit and thus pulled the scarf over his face.
There is nothing ninja about it. AT ALL.
Personally I expected to hate the first thing I'd see about Thief 4. I did give my best to hate that demo reel, but I just couldn't. Too many things felt right about it, even if a change from the classic, it felt like a change into a good direction.
However, the core is still gameplay and how the story is told and narrated by Garrett. At this point I still expect Thief 4 to be a failure.

The cinematic would have been created under strict supervision to adhere to the style and tone of the game. Notice how it focusses on thieving skills of hiding, watching, lockpicking, etc. The way Garrett holds his lockpicks out like a conductor...he's a master thief!
I think the fact they highlight these attributes is a
very good sign for the game itself.
Same here. I agree with that. While we see him drawing a bow, we don't know what is done with it. Otherwise I see very Thief-ish things and he even runs away when being pursued and doesn't stay and draw his sword. If Eidos can transfere these elements into the game, than they might have understood what "Thief" is all about.

It looks like a DarkMod level someone mocked up to fool people.

yeah that doesn't even make sense
Brethren - are you talking about real, historical ninja or film and game ninja? Because I'm talking historical and yes.

It looks like a ninja wearing a tunic.

I would prefer it if we start calling it Bandit Mask for the sake of it sounds less irritating.

I'd say we do, but its only for a second. At 0:22 in the downloaded clip we see two figures in a bright light hallway with gleaming heads advancing on Garrett, one also has a silver line coming from its center as if holding a sword.
In the following scene we see two figures running down a hallway. One is obviously a guard, the other is tougher to make out. I'd say that's Garrett Fleeing from the remaining guard he wasn't able to take care of (Would make a cool action/chase scene) and then dropping a flashbang (He puts white stuff into it in the beginning, but it could be something else like smoke) which if you pause the screen again at just the right time, you will see the guard advancing Toward the object that just hit the ground.

Two thoughts about this: First, there isn't
nothing we argue about, it's a very clear image of a modern (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compound_bow) compound bow (NOT an ordinary composite bow) including the cables and pulleys, which is on top of that telescope-like extensible (and which he shoots with his hand twisted for some reason or another). You don't have to be a middle ages purist to be a little bit turned off bit it's plain anachronism. That brings me to the second thought, "to be available" only counts within the universe (otherwise he could shoot tasers as well) and for that it's IMHO a bit too odd, especially if you take into account the other things you see in this video (architecture, which is IMHO very TDS-like if you look at TDS's concept art, the woman's clothing, the picture frame etc.). It doesn't look neither medieval nor steampunkish (yet), hence the skepticism.
