You don't have to be a middle ages purist to be a little bit turned off bit it's plain anachronism.
But Thief is set in a fantasy world, not the middle ages; the anachronistic and supernatural elements make Thief what it is.

It's always gonna be subjective, but some things can get by my anachronoalarm, other things don't. This doesn't.
If they gave Mr G an actual Ford Pickup it wouldn't. If they made it a stealth Ford Pickup that could drive itself (and therefore be a fantasy ford pickup) it still wouldn't. If they gave him a steam punk carriage that could drive itself, maybe it would wash.
Though I'm not nearly as worried about that as I am that it does nothing but reinforce my existingly held world view that the gameplay and characterization in Thiaf are going to be naff.

The music sounds like porn music. Maybe Garrett has picked up a new side occupation.

Garrett goes after the madame in the brothel. Clearly that is what he's doing. :P

I do see what you mean...you think the bow is too recognisable as a
genuine modern type of bow, rather than a fantasy construction. I don't really agree, but I do appreciate what you mean.

I'm not sure how this video reinforces your view that the gameplay
or characterisation will be bad... We haven't seen any gameplay, and what characterisation we've seen - Garrett as a skilled master thief - tallies perfectly with the previous games!
I'm hopeful, anyway :)

Maybe Garrett IS a ninja.

That's the beauty of pre-existing world views. One goes looking for things to reinforce them and, seen through said pre-existing world view spectacles, pretty much anything will do.
I'd disagree with the last bit though. I don't think Garrett was previously characterized as a dude with an awesome bat-bow. The prospect that having awesome bionic man-toys might become part of the characterization, like a bad Tom Clancy game, makes me wince a bit to be honest.

As if this isn't already the case, with the mechanical eye and all. Come on, I'm not a fan of the bow either, but it's definitely justifiable.
jay pettitt on 16/6/2012 at 18:19
Fair enough, but it's not really a show-off boy-toy in quite the same way as a transforming bat-bow. I don't think anyone at LGS thought that the eye should come with a take-down animation and woosh, clunk, clunk, click sound effect.

There's bound to be consessions to try to make playing a thief cooler to a more mainstream audience. Hopefully the bow will be the worst example of that...
