Don't forget -- 3rd person and 1st person views have totally different game mechanics and physical awareness. Having it a"switch on the fly" a la TDS would cause it to be faulty a la TDS ... there would have to be a load time and a whole new set of mechanics ...
More detail please.
EDIT: just expanded the quote a bit

TDS was glitchy but I don't think it could not be tweaked to be seamless. Even replacing the player actor could work. In The Witcher you were able to switch from Diablo-style control to 3rd person without re-loading, don't know why it shouldn't work here (at least in a bearable way).

I know what you meant here, but just as a nitpick, Diablo's isometric view is technically also 3rd person.

Classy. But also, just think--that's a year that could have been spent on more levels, better AI, bugfixes, etc.
Besides, are you saying that you couldn't enjoy Thief 1 & 2 due to the perspective?
I'm not talking for an extra year after the game is ready. An extra year but NOT like that - make 1st person view, make the whole game, fix all bugs and after that 1 year making 3rd view. I am talking about making 3rd view in parallel. That extra year will be generated during the whole process of developing. The bugs and levels are supposed to be corrected in the meantime.
I enjoyed T1&2. But I liked the option to switch views in T3. Sometimes prefer 1st sometimes 3rd. But 3rd more. :)

That's what they did with TDS too...and it turned out very badly. You don't seem to understand that it's still going to take development time away from first person...and first person is what the Thief games were created for. LGS wanted to design a series that was less action oriented. The first two games are classics and continue to sell very well. They get mentioned as some of the best games of all time, yet...when every time there is a sequel...someone comes along wanting to fundamentally change the gameplay. We have soooo many games that do the same thing over and over and over. Why can't we just have one series that dares to be different and doesn't have to bend over backwards to satisfy every mainstream player preference?
Third person is great...just not for a Thief game.

A new texture pack for Thief 2 for better graphics and 10 more missions for Thief 2 will solve your problem for a new game to play. You can call it Thief 4. :sly:
As for me I want something new. I played T1,2,3 already and don't want to play the same stuff. I want something new and revolutionary. I want to have the choice whether to play in 1st or 3rd person. :)

...you already have.

If you want 3rd person point of view, you can't forget 2nd person point of view! Ignoring something from the middle is mean and discriminating. Second person point of view is this thing that they used in Ghost in The Shell where they tapped to their opponents eyesight to see what they were doing. And don't tell me that it's ridiculous, you can't just pick and choose two from the three options. It's either one or all of them.

I frankly can't understand the crotchety old Thief 1 and T2 fans' reticence with Third Person. I've played this series since '98 and can appreciate the addition of Third Person, as an option if nothing else!
Garrett looks too good to remain unseen to the player. And even as a fan of the original two games... if those games had third person as an option, I would have enjoyed them far more. I detest first-person. Even games that employ a first person viewpoint and aren't mindless shooters (such as Mirror's Edge or of course Thief) suffer because of that flawed design choice. It decreases your maneuverability. Garrett moves like a robot through most of Thief 1 and 2, and even quite a bit in Deadly Shadows. The Thief series, as great as it is, has suffered for this.
There should be more acrobatics employed. What sort of medieval Thief would move around as stiffly as Garrett has throughout the series? But more importantly, how could these vital platforming mechanics be implemented without a third-person mode?
Put the nostalgia glasses down.

Some things are more appealing when stay hidden. This was a tactic of LG in T1and2.
